Production has finally begun on Legendary and Universal's Detective Pikachu, the first live-action entry to the long-running franchise. As a result, we have some photos from the set of the movie offering a sneak peek at Ryme City and its "Human/Pokemon Partnership" police department. That presumably explains why the titular character (played by Ryan Reynolds) has been assigned to solve crimes!

These images reveal that Pokemon
have gone missing, so maybe that's what he's investigating.

Detective Pikachu also stars Ken Watanabe (Godzilla), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). Rob Letterman (Ghostbusters) is directing the movie and it's currently set to be released in North America on May 10th, 2019.

A Detective Pikachu video game is coming to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems early this year where the new Detective Pikachu character will be introduced. The game is used as inspiration for the storyline of the film and Mary Parent and Cale Boyter are producing for Legendary Entertainment, while Joe Caracciolo, Jr. (Logan) and The Pokémon Company’s Tsunekazu Ishihara serve as its executive producers. Legendary’s Alexandra Mendes co-produces. Are you guys excited to check this movie out?

I have no reaction to this either way, but I guarantee I'll have to take my kids to see this.

Think of the movies that are in development hell while this movie is practically flying to theaters.

Kind of a weird way to go with this first ever live action Pokemon movie. It could have been huge. Not that I necessarily think this will suck.

So the Pokemons will look like the game... I don't know about this, could be weird to see cartoonish Pokemon with real humans. Kind of want to see the result even if I have no hype for this.

2 decades of people wanting a live action Pokemon movie and they go this idiotic route. It'll flop then they'll think its not profitable. I'm not a big fan of Pokemon but I recognize the fandom so it sucks that they can't get a movie based on the core aspects of what made it popular on the first place.

@Kevwebsz - Speak for yourself. As a fan, I don't even want a live-action movie, especially for the mainline games. Not everything adapts well to the big screen.

Well at least the missing posters confirm the Pokemon will look terrible. Was it too much to ask for something a tad realistic that actually looks like it could be a living thing?

@CLTMAN29 - I think they are just going to end up making it look like this but I expected better than that for a feature length film.

@ScionStorm - you guys should check out joshua Dunlop on Twitter. He’s been doing realistic Pokemon art for a year now and it’s incredible. Thoughts he may have been approached for this.

@CLTMAN29 - I've seen some of his work. A lot of his work is really good but his Charmander and Charmeleon are terrible. He broke their spines to make them look more like raptors. :/ There's adapting pokemon to look more realistic in our world, and then there is breaking there shape and spine to make them conform to animals in our world-which is the wrong way to go in my opinion.

It just dawned on me that this movie might be huge if it's good. Like, really huge.

Now, I would have preferred the first live action Pokemon movie to be along the lines of traditional Pokemon rather than Detective Pikachu, but we'll see if it works.

Still think not casting Danny Devito was a mistake. He was born to play a hard boiled, boozing detective that divorced his hoor of a wife while feasting on Rum-Ham and plowing broads with his magnum condoms........who just happens to be a small electric mouse.

Looks at Avatar. Thinks "Pokemon live action could really look good!"

Looks at police board set photo. Pukes.

I have always wanted a live-action Pokemon movie. It would looks so cool! But this... confining itself to a single city with a talking pikachu and a missing persons mystery. That is not the right way to start off a live action pokemon franchise. Ugh.

Also, Detective Pikachu isn't a new game. It's actually several years old but wasn't imported worldwide until now.

I mean, we COULD have something where Pokemon actually look really cool. And the whimsical ones could still look whimsical, the dangerous ones could still look cool. They don't all have to look creepy or scary. Real life animals don't all look creepy and scary so that isn't a requirement for turning them into realistic. But they could still look SOOOO much better than that police board art.

But instead we are getting this in live action...

I do not approve.
