Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have addressed the fact that there are multiple versions of the Infinity Gauntlet in the MCU with a compelling explanation...

The first THOR movie featured an Infinity Gauntlet in Odin's vault, while Avengers: Age of Ultron showed Thanos with that weapon now in his possession. However, by the time Avengers: Infinity War rolled around, we learned that the Mad Titan had forced Eitri to create the Gauntlet for him, creating something of a plot hole in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thor: Ragnarok would later reveal that Odin's Gauntlet was a fake, but that still doesn't explain what the deal was in Joss Whedon's 2015 movie.

Well, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have now shed some light on that by revealing that the Infinity Gauntlet Thanos donned in that post-credits scene was just a "practice gauntlet." However, when he needed the real deal, that's why he got Eitri to make one for him.

This is still an explanation it would be easy enough to pick holes in, but it's as good as it's going to get at this point, and it does make sense! Plus, there being more than one Infinity Gauntlet in the MCU would have made the mission of Earth's Mightiest Heroes far too easy in Avengers: Endgame!

Why not just say the post credit scene took place after Eitri created the gauntlet. It's not like post-credit scenes didn't take place in a different time than the movie before

@MalseMarcel - Yeah, I don't get why that scene couldn't be at Eitri's. I always assumed it was

@MalseMarcel - Exactly. Many after credits scenes take place at different times than the movie they are shown with.

Why would Thanos say, Fine, I'll do it myself", in obvious frustration and like he's going to take action, and then put on a practice gauntlet? Lol. Also, why wouldn't he have already gone to Eitri and had a Gauntlet made? Why wait until the last minute before going out on his own to go get one made? He obviously knew he was going to need a gauntlet if he had a practice one.

That's like saying a criminals henchmen failed at something so he stands up and finally decides to get involved himself, then picking up a paintball gun.

@MalseMarcel - Honestly Markus and McFeely have been saying a lot of weird stuff recently.

Truth is, they were making it up as they were going... but it's the small details they were making up. The writers and producers had the MACRO idea figured out. These small details are almost negligible in the grand scheme of the MCU story.

It's funny honestly. Other studios drop the ball all the time on big and small details. Marvel drops the ball on things that they can easily retcon without having to reboot their entire damn franchise.

@VicSage - Sure, this is negligible. But they should think about better answers before throwing things out that don't make much sense.

This happened when different people were all trying to explain how the time travel stuff in Infinity War worked too. You have different people that did different things on the movie all giving exanations that they all didn't think of before. Same thing here. A practice glove? Why not just say that scene took place after Thanos had Eitri make him the glove? That makes way more sense.

@CorndogBurglar - Any number of answers is better than "practice glove". I honestly just don't care too much about it. That end scene is completely unnecessary anyway. It doesn't add nor take anything away from the story at large. One could go there whole life never seeing it and STILL come out with an explanation for how Thanos got his gauntlet. It's not even worth the time and effort to fret

"Practice gauntlet" LMAO! Are you kidding me? You can literally just choose to ignore the scene altogether (it's not like they're the ones that wrote the scene), or just say it takes place in the future. Honestly it's not like the scene ever made sense in the context of Age of Ultron so it can be taken out of that context.

Don't know why these guys keep taking the more difficult explanations to justify stuff.

Obviously Eitri knew of the power of the stones. He didn't just design a gauntlet for a power he had no idea existed. So if Eitri was the smith to the Asgardians, they knew about the gauntlet design too. Hence, the fake gauntlet in Odin's vault. As for Thanos' "practice gauntlet." That's still pretty stupid. Who created it? They could've just said that scene took place as it was coming out of the forge. Just because it was right after Age of Ultron doesn't mean it's chronological.

Nothing about the Ultron scene ever bothered me. We don’t know when Eitri created the Gauntlet and Thanos killed his people... I don’t even see a need to say the scene was out of Chronology.

During Age of Ultron, Thanos forces Eitri to make the Gauntlet.
Thanos keeps tabs on the known locations of the infinity stones. When he gets reports that Ultron doesn’t wipe out the Avengers, he says “Fine... I’ll do it myself” and takes up the newly made Gauntlet.
Thor takes off to investigate the Stones, leading to Thor: Ragnarok
Thanos attacks Xandar and gets the power Stone.
At the end of Thor Ragnarok, Thanos attacks the remains of Asgard.
Avengers Infinity War begins.

It requires enough time to pass after Thor leaves to investigate the stones and Thanos takes up the Gauntlet for “Civil War” to happen, but there’s no saying how long Thanos took to get the Power Stone from Xandar... it could have involved a fair amount of planning and prep and conquest. The point is that when he took to wearing the Gauntlet he was committed to seeing his quest through and not putting his focus on other tasks from then on.
