FandangoNOW Just Recorded Its Biggest Weekend Ever With Theaters Shut Down Across North America FandangoNOW Just Recorded Its Biggest Weekend Ever With Theaters Shut Down Across North America

Proving that there's definitely an appetite for Digital titles while theaters remain closed, FandangoNOW just reported its biggest weekend ever as film fans checked out the likes of Onward and The Hunt...

Movie theaters may be closed, but Digital movie retailer FandangoNOW just had a great weekend.

Fandango's Managing Editor Erik Davis has taken to Twitter to reveal that the online service had its biggest weekend ever thanks to movie rentals and purchases. There was a lot on offer for film fans, including Pixar's Onward and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man (both of which were released early due to their theatrical runs being cut short).

As you can see below, those two movies actually topped the list, while other recent releases like Jumanji: The Next Level and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - which were set to be released in time for this past weekend regardless - weren't too far behind.

For the foreseeable future, streaming and Digital will be the only way for people to experience new movies, and you have to believe studios are going to be watching these numbers very closely.

After all, if Disney comes to the conclusion that they can stick a hefty price tag on Black Widow and turn a profit, then we may get to watch it sooner rather than later. Ultimately, it depends how long these closures will last, but President Donald Trump has already talked about lifting lockdowns in the coming weeks to kickstart the economy (despite what scientists are saying).

What did you guys watch over the weekend?

Release the ACTUAL numbers and we'll see what a giant pile of nothing it was.

People wishing movie theaters away because they think they will see movies sooner are almost impossibly stupid. Even if theaters vanished, you'd still have to wait for them to actually make the movies and they will still be released on a schedule.

I mean - I understand the people who are shut ins and don't like to leave their homes want this - but I still think that's a very small percentage of the population.

I think there are specific “event movies” you have to see in a crowded auditorium on opening weekend (Star Wars, Avengers, Lord of the Rings, etc) but then there’s smaller stuff that I want to see, but I’d rather watch it at home than in a crowded theater. Take Richard Jewell for instance; great cast, great director, great story. When I first saw the trailer I thought “Yeah, I’m gonna go see that.” but they released it during a really crowded season. Jumanji had just come out, Star Wars released that same weekend, I think 1917 came out that same day, and a week later all the Christmas stuff dropped (Cats, etc). The idea of going to a crowded movie theater on that day sounded terrible. Had the option existed to rent Richard Jewell at home, for a fair price, on release day, I would’ve done it.

Nice to see Just Mercy up there. It was great. Shang-Chi is in good hands. Destin Daniel Cretton's filmography is very impressive.

Movie theaters will eventually go the way of Blockbuster folks, change is part of nature.

Why is Harley Quinn the thumbnail yet BOP is nowhere on that Top 10 list and not mentioned at all in the article?

I'm going to try to rent a movie everyday or every other day. Yesterday I rented Just mercy and buffaloed.

Just mercy was pretty good. I dont think they gave some of them a whole lot to do but Michael B was in top form. Scene stealer was the guy who played herb. That one scene was brilliant. 4/5 rating for me.

Buffaloed... Buffaloed... Buffaloed. Why the hell did I rent this? I turned it off after 20 minutes and I'm not sure I'm going to finish watching.

Just bought the way back. Will update with rating once I'm done.

“(Despite what scientists are saying)”. A word of advice: Let’s keep politics out of this type of thing. It has no place here. Write an objective article. It doesn’t need to be us versus them anymore. We’re in this together. There are valid arguments to be made for a continued shutdown and getting back to life and establishing a herd immunity. Scientists are making both arguments. We just don’t need this type of cheap shot or nonsensical back and forth when we go to get news of comic book movies.
