Early BLUE BEETLE Box Office Tracking Has The Film Earning Less Than $20M In Its Opening Weekend Early BLUE BEETLE Box Office Tracking Has The Film Earning Less Than $20M In Its Opening Weekend

Blue Beetle is certainly fighting an uphill battle as it looks to buck the trend of recent DCEU box office bombs like Black Adam, Shazam 2, and The Flash.

Warner Bros. may have shot itself in the foot by announcing a new cinematic universe for its DC Comics heroes while there were still several DC Comics films to be released.

James Gunn's reboot of the DC films was announced on January 31, 2023. He was appointed co-CEO of DC Films along with Peter Safran. The announcement was made in a video posted on Twitter.

However, true talk of a reboot began in August 2022, when  Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) CEO David Zaslav revealed his desire to "reset" the DC film universe during a quarterly earnings investor call.

Since that earnings investor call, it's been one box office bomb after another.  Black Adam, Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods, and The Flash have all failed to turn a profit for WBD.

Will Blue Beetle turn out differently?

It sure doesn't look that way, as early tracking from BoxOffcePro.com has the film earning $12-$17M domestically in its opening weekend, with a total domestic gross of just $27-$55M.

With a reported $120M production budget, Blue Beetle will need to have a strong international box office performance to avoid a similar fate as WBD's last three superhero films.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Starring alongside Maridueña (“Cobra Kai”) are Adriana Barraza (“Rambo: Last Blood,” “Thor”), Damían Alcázar (“Narcos,” “Narcos: Mexico”), Elpidia Carrillo (“Mayans M.C.,” the “Predator” films), Bruna Marquezine (“Maldivas,” “God Save the King”), Raoul Max Trujillo (the “Sicario” films, “Mayans M.C.”), with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (“Monarch,” “Dead Man Walking”), and George Lopez (the “Rio and “Smurf” franchises). The film also stars Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories,” “Hocus Pocus 2”) and Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”). Soto (“Charm City Kings,” “The Farm”) directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”), based on characters from DC. John Rickard and Zev Foreman are producing, with Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Garrett Grant serving as executive producers.

Its ridiculous to assume that the same fanbase that got tired of GoT, were burnt out on LotR to the point they didnt embrace the Hobbit trilogy, to the bombing of Rings of Power, the same fanbase that got burnt out on Walking Dead, wouldnt invetably be burnt out on Superhero films.
These films are flopping because the fanbase is seeking something new.

@artofwilldeonne - that’s right, are used to keep up with The Walking Dead whenever an episode came out, but now I kind of catch up with a season to use after it comes out. Not Exciting anymore. Yet entertaining enough down the road.

@artofwilldeonne - I stopped watching the Walking Dead when they refused to pay the women a fair wage. (That was a LONG time ago now). I've heard they deviated way too much from the comics since then, because a lot of actors walked out over it (including Rick I think).

@artofwilldeonne - I don't think anyone got tired of GoT though. That show was at peak popularity when the final season dropped and it was only then that it lost the fanbase. But it didn't matter because it was the final season, so it was ending anyway.

The Hobbit should have been one movie, not three. They got greedy and delivered a tiresome, boring-ass product that no-one wanted.

"Warner Bros. may have shot itself in the foot by announcing a new cinematic universe for its DC Comics heroes while there were still several DC Comics films to be released."

Does anyone really think the general audience knew or cared about this so called reboot ? DC's non-Batman movies were failing to reach half a billion since 2019's Shazam, years ahead of Gunn taking over DC and announcing his reboot. As for Blue Beetle, of course it's failing, it's built on a foundation of shit and mediocrity.

@Th3Batman - General audiences lost interest in DC a long time ago, but because of the reboot announcement, they also lost the comic books fans...
DianaGohan
DianaGohan - 7/20/2023, 9:12 PM
@Th3Batman - There is truth to that as it's if the movie looks good to consumers and has general appeal that determines if a film is a success. That's why the biggest success of the DC movies is Aquaman since even if critically it wasn't that great it actually not only looked like a fun time but generally appeasing in a way most DC movies just haven't been able to capture. And yeah Blue Beetle certainly isn't going to change that especially since not only do few people know Blue Beetle as a character but again doesn't look that appealing as a film. And quite honestly i think the only reason Gunn is saying htis is the first movie of the DCU is to try and save some sort of face that they are trying to build to something NOW instead of waiting 2 years for that but... yeah that's not really working at all and it'd be better if they were more upfront on what these movies generally are.
Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 7/20/2023, 9:16 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - This is a good point, but keep in mind that comic fans don't make that big of a percentage of moviegoers. All you have to do to realize this is look at current comic book sales.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/20/2023, 9:25 PM
@Th3Batman - I think the $300M-$400M movies like Ant-Man 3 are doing, are from comic book fans, and if you look back to the early-mid '00s...those were the numbers the genre did back then.

I dont think the genre will DIE, but its getting a lot smaller, movies getting $100M budget with studios expecting $300M at the BO, which GOOD comic book movies, will still make.
I might be putting too much faith on Superman Legacy, but I think is starting a new era for the genre, with studios making one movie per year, but that movie being pretty good, and without ridiculous budgets, filmmakers having the liberty to make whatever they want.

Th3Batman
Th3Batman - 7/20/2023, 9:36 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Superman Legacy will be a good movie, but it's still going to lose $$$ as a result of what came before it. WBD will need to understand that it will take time to regain the public's trust. If they just throw out their plans and panic, it's just going to prolong the healing process. As for the numbers back then, keep in mind that back then those numbers were worth a lot more than they were today, so it wasn't just comic fans keeping those movies going.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 7/20/2023, 9:50 PM
@Th3Batman - If it's failing it is because the subpar CEO of WBD thought for a reason it made sense to move it from it's streaming release to theatrical. Up until last year, Blue Beetle was looking fine and acceptable and likely Batgirl as well. Until Zaslav screwed it all.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 7/20/2023, 9:59 PM
@Th3Batman - Depends on the budget, if the budget for Legacy is $100M, movie only needs to make $200M to break even, and considering James Gunn's name attached to it, is easily making over $300M, despite the DC brand in the state it is...
However, if Warner is expecting to make even Man of Steel numbers ($650M) and gives the movie a ridiculous budget because of that...they'll lose money again.

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/20/2023, 8:21 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Yep, at this point only big name characters and fan favorites are going to make any acceptable amount of money.

The MCU had it on lock. But after Endgame most of their exciting characters that made the MCU what it was are gone and we're left with side characters. And we see how that is going.

TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 7/20/2023, 8:40 PM

TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 7/20/2023, 9:38 PM
@BeefyTrout - doesn’t matter if it exists or not, what matters is some people perceive it as being in the movies or shows, and avoid it. Now whether it’s their imagination that it’s there or yours that it isn’t, I don’t care. But it affects the bottom line. “You’re imagining that too!” Idc.
DianaGohan
DianaGohan - 7/20/2023, 10:36 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Outside of Black Widow, Eterenals and Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania though all of those Phase Four/Start of Phase Five movies have actually been profitable. and only Eternals and Ant man 3 were because of being viewed as bad movies as Black Widow was marked the same time as it's Disney Plus Debut so if marketted well and it's a solid movie MCU movies can still make bank. DC though yeah hasn't really had a solid hit in the DCEU since Aquaman. I guess the first Shazam due to not being that expensive to make was profitable but otherwise the studio has finaical miss after miss and yeah Blue Beetle is going to be another one of them. Maybe Batgirl's revenge since BB was also an HBO Max original movie before becoming theatrical... for some reason.

@BeefyTrout - The co-opting of a term, its bastardization, then its ad nauseam usage with nary an explanation as to its meaning.

Tale as old as time.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/21/2023, 12:28 AM
@MrDandy - You're 100% right. They should have focused on their tried and true characters being in the spotlight then sprinkled in the C and D listers.

That's basically how they approached phase 1. Iron Man was a known name even if people didn't really know anything about him. Then they did Hulk. Then Iron Man 2. Then Thor. Then Cap.

But the point is, the established the more well known characters first before trying something crazy like Guardians of the Galaxy. But people still went and saw Guardians because the MCU already had their attention.

They needed to go that route again after Endgame. But I think they believed that people were just going to see and like anything MCU at that point. And people WERE willing to. But then so much of Phase 4 was a letdown that now they have become a quickly sinking ship.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/21/2023, 12:36 AM
@DianaGohan - Profitable, yes. But they aren't making what they used to. And Ant Man was marketed as a huge piece of the overall Multiverse storyline. And it still lost money.

The CBM genre is in trouble. DC more-so than Marvel. But the entire genre is hurting right now. And if Marvel doesn't do something fast then they will be right therr with DC in another year or two.

We had Bob Iger come out just the other day and admitted that they are hurting. So much so that they are cutting back on content and budgets. He called it a "cost saving initiative" I believe. They wouldn't be doing that if they were still making truck loads of money. There would be no need to. And that was straight from the horse's mouth.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 7/21/2023, 3:01 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - It's all DC's fault. Marvel hasn't been helping much recently either. But DC is an embarassment. All this time cbms have been making comic book superheroes presentable to the GA as something that they can invest in and DC just keeps taking a wrecking ball to all that with almost every movie they put out.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 7/21/2023, 3:19 PM
@ObserverIO - yeah, with good quality movies, well from both sides, but Marvin did their part in a big way,, but anyway, good movies would have kept this thing going and going. I know that some MCU properties and some DC properties, particularly Batman, will still put butts in seats… but the dark Knight trilogy, and the MCU’s heyday, are a thing of the past. Since they keep trying, we can’t really sit back and enjoy the nostalgia. Well, maybe the strike will do what the pandemic couldn’t. Kill us all. I mean, end cinema. End cinema.
