Conan Finishes 4th Friday Night Conan Finishes 4th Friday Night

In not so surprising news, Conan the Barbarian finished in fourth place at the box office Friday night.

Despite having a "B-" CinemaScore, Conan the Barbarian couldn't slash its way through to the top of the box office Friday night. Director Marcus Nispel, known for remakes of Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, looks to be continuing his mediocre run at trying to revive classic 80's movies. He looks to be on course for another sub-par remake with Conan the Barbarian if Friday's box office results are any indicator of what is to come.

Many fans were hoping that this could be the turning point for a character that deserves to have a great franchise. Sadly though, Conan might be better suited for a direct to video franchise. Currently Conan the Barbarian is on course for an $11,000,000 opening weekend.

Spy Kids beating this was a given. I'm actually surprised it's ahead of Fright Night.

I knew it'd be beaten by Spy Kids. Which is lame, because I'd rather see Rachel Nichols nude than Jessica Alba in a catsuit.

Actually, I didn't imagine it coming in at 4 on it's opening. That's [frick]ing pathetic. It couldn't even beat SPYKIDS?

Mamoa, Nespil, and the chance of bringing Conan back to the big screen is over.

I didn't expect Conan to do well, but why is Fright Night doing way so awful i thought it was going to make like 18 to $20 million.

1981...

Best picture of the year...Conan the Barbarian
Best Actor...Arnold Schwarzenegger

(Insert Sarcasim at any point)

I love the original Conan as much as anyone else. I was 10 years old when I saw it for the first time. The blood, fantasy, women (I played a lot of D&D at that time). But how good was this movie really?

I watched it again last night and I have to tell you, it's not as good as I remember it.

This new Conan is exacatly what it's suppost to be. A mindless, action filled, blood and guts movie.

Back in 1981 we were all excited for Conan because it's all we had. No super hero movies, no other fantasy movies, No internet to show us set pictures and discussion, no net flix for instant movies, VCR's were very new and you needed to go to your local gas station to rent a movie...the original Conan was EPIC because we needed it too be and made it that way because you needed too see it in the theature multiple times to catch everything.

Today our standards for remakes of old "epic" movies are just too damn high. We expected too much from this movie. In our eyes it would only have had a chance is if old Arnold himself had made Conan 3.

I liked this movie for what it is, just like I like the original for what it was.

Now pass me them damn Whisky and stop complaining about this movie.

Conan is a much better late night talk show host than he is a barbarian

I saw Fright Night and not too suprised it was meh at the box office. The original was much better. People probably just put the original on their netflix list and stayed at home. I wish I did. I dunno seems like some remakes are just slightly modified fan films with a large budget. It just seemed rush like they were in a hurry to get to all the FX shots. The original evil eddie was soo much better than this version. Save a buck and rent the original.

GRIPE: I have to complain about how theaters are handling 3D and non 3d showings. Most the theaters in my town had one 2D showing and the rest of the day is 3D crap probably. I had to go one ofnthe further ones to avoid 3d. Also film makers NEED to stop blocking their shots specifically for 3d crap. When you watch it in 2d there are too many blatant shots that scream LOOK its 3D!! But it was good to see an actual vampire film for a change even though it was meh. They even made fun of the whinny Twilight movies. A bit.

Well it ain't rocket science or astrophysics my friend. This film was 'Doomed' from the beginning. Sticking feathers up your arse doesn't make you a chicken, and putting Momoa with sword and sandals doesn't make him Conan.

Totally agree with all you said.
I just watched this new version and really enjoyed it.It was everything they set out to do.
Expecting a niche genre movie like Conan to dominate the whole marketplace is just naive wishfull fanboy thinking. Also, box office is in no way an indication of quality or any way to structure an opinion on a movie.
My advice is forget your expectations.Ignore fanboy bollocks and watch the movie on the big screen with an open mind.Stop letting internet hype form your opinions for you.If you watch the movie and hate it,fair enough.

Not really that surprising. I didn't expect it to be a big box office hit when they went the route of being true to Howard's books and created a barbaric Conan film with brutal violence, blood and boobs. Being R-Rated and not something parents will take their kids or want their young teens to see, it isn't going to be a box office draw. That's okay with me as long as the film delivers what I hope it to. Going to see it the first of next week.

Hey...it finished ahead of the other new release remake that many people here were singing the praise of. Where's the article stating that Fright Night Finishes 5th Friday Night? A little bias out there toward this film?

I was there opening night and it SUCKED! Would prefer to watch the first Arnie movie....but it was still better than Destroyer, that movie was an abortion! Where is Ranger praising this movie now? Yeah I would hide under a rock too if I were you. lol

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

Questions I had about the movie:

1. All Zym's mask could do was bring back his dead sorceress wife? Seemed pretty anticlimactic.

2. The spell was cast successfully, why did it fail when he falls? She should have transformed regardless.

How many different ways are there to say Conan? No two people said his name the same way. Conan? Conen? Conin? A little consistency would have been nice.

3. Why do I even care enough to ask?

Sortis@ Funny...I posted right before you did. Not hiding at all. Who looks foolish now? I haven't seen the movie yet, but I do know it will be better than what I thought the Arnie movie was. Hell, the trailer is better than what the first Arnie was because the first Arnie movie had nothing to do with Howard's Conan other than being named Conan.

...and pray tell...how was the movie an abortion? Abortion of what? Abortion of Howard's character? How so?

theWorld@ Sorry, can't agree with you there. Some of my favorite movies were box office failures and there are some crappy movies that did great in the box office. That's why certain movies become "cult classics" because they didn't do well in the box office, but they have a loyal following that look beyond the numbers and see a film for what it was intended to be. Avatar had all the modern technology and box office numbers, but the story sucked and was not original at all. Acting was mediocre. But, that is my opinion and we all have our opinions. What you think might suck, I might think is great and vice-versa. It is really pointless to argue about it.

Considering the top 10 grossing films in Hollywood history were all released over 14 years ago, I don't think that just because this is 2011 it doesn't mean a movie should have a better chance of being good or not. If you go by your assumption that box office dictates a good movie, then the quality of movies was overall better 14 years ago and prior.

The 80's Conan with Arnie opened to a $9 million weekend and only grossed $39 million at the end of its run!

The sequel Conan the Destroyer opened even worse at $6 million and earned a pitiful $31 million at the end of its run.

This new Conan film will open to an expected $13 million, Saturday will be a better day for it because of its rating but word of mouth and reviews are not good so don't expect it to gross magnificent box office. What it will do is out gross both the other 80's versions by a mile when it's done, this is only the Friday gross and not one film in the top 5 is doing well on launch because the real big guns have all had their say and people have basically spent their worth for the summer.

Plus this genre has a bad tradition at the box office:

Conan the Barbarian - $39,565,475
Conan the Destroyer - $31,042,035
Red Sonja - $6,948,633
The Sword and the Sorcerer - $39,103,425
Excalibur - $34,967,437

Lord of the Rings is the only thing close to this genre to do well at the box office. Sword and Sorcery fans just aren't enough to support the genre at the movies and the general public don't go for this type of stuff.

@Ranger14 - only 3 movies in the top ten domestic of all time were made over 14 years ago, E.T, Star Wars:ANH and Titanic. Everything else was made pretty recent!

And even the top 10 of all time has merely one film made over 14 years ago and that's Titanic, everything else in the worldwide chart was made in the last 8 years, most in the last five years!

Box office has no bearing on a film's technical quality, but it does show what people are enjoying enough to part with their hard earned cash.

I plan to see it. I like the books so i will probably like the film. Plus, I liked pathfinder. Not many did I guess, but I did. So, I am sure I will dig this flick.
