Happy Star Wars Day!

It wouldn't be May 4th without a big rumour relating to the future of this iconic franchise, and Cinelinx's Jordan Maison has now dropped an intriguing mention about plans for animated Star Wars movies on Disney+. The Clone Wars star Matt Lanter recently teased his return as Anakin Skywalker, so a solo outing revolving around his time as a Jedi wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility, for example.

It's likely still early days, but we know Lucasfilm is developing a number of live-action TV shows for the streaming service, while animated properties like The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch have proven to be right at home on Disney+. Big screen plans for the franchise remain vague, but if The Mandalorian has proven anything, it's that this Galaxy Far, Far Away works just as well on television.

There are lots of gaps in the Star Wars Universe's history that could be filled in with an animated feature, and any number of characters who might benefit from being the focus.

Unfortunately, until Lucasfilm makes some official announcements, we're obviously left to speculate!

Check out Maison's comments below:

All I'm asking for is a live-action Darth Vader tv show.

That would actually pretty cool. Hopefully they'll use the style from the Clone Wars, or maybe even a new style. Just not the Rebels or Resistance ones

Do we really need to see more of Anakin as a Jedi? Between the prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars I'm not sure there's anything else I would want to see of that.

But animated movies about other characters? Sure. Why not?

@CorndogBurglar - I agree. the story of Anakin Skywalker has had 3 movies and 6 seasons of character development. I think we have enough. lol

@Mrflibbleisverycross - The Clone Wars won't be complete until we get Son of Dathomir, Dark Disciple and the Crystal Crisis on Utapau.

@AndrewHolland - That could be.....interesting. I always wondered what they were doing before Darth Maul and the Sith surfaced. I mean, were they just going on missions to negotiate with other planets and factions? Were they fighting the criminal underworld?

It just seems like there wasn't much for them to do with no Sith or other serious threats to worry about.

I’m not sure how to feel. I feel like every Star Wars movie should be live action and I don’t mind some tv shows being live action and some being animated.

@tb86 - I respectfully disagree. Especially with the success of Clone Wars and Rebels, to an extent. They already have a style fans like and the only thing missing are the stories. Animated projects also seem to not to typically run into the creative control problem that live action films do. This is a different genre altogether, but my best example of this is Mask of the Phantasm. It's not a good animated Batman movie, it's a good Batman movie. So to me it can be done, provided there's clear direction and it's not meddled with like the films have been to this point.

I just want a Jedi Civil War / Knights of the Old Republic franchise, dude. I don't really care what form it takes.

I’ve been waiting for a Shadows Of The Empire animated movie since the 90s. I’d love from them to do it in 2D, but the CW style would be awesome too.
