The box office results for Dune: Part Two remain impressive in the face of fierce, kaiju-sized competition in the form of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Warner Bros. Discovery's Dune: Part Two is in its sixth weekend of release and is still sandwalking its way to new box office heights.

After closing out the previous weekend with a global total of $626 million, the movie is currently sitting at $660.7 million as of Sunday. This new total comes after adding $11.2 million from overseas and $7.20 million from local theater sales for a global weekend total of $18.4 million.

The Dune sequel is now losing ground to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire at the box office and on IMAX screens, but the good news for both films is that until Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opens on May 10, there won't be another big blockbuster tentpole released.

At the moment, a $700M+ global finish for Dune: Part Two seems all but guaranteed. Recently, it was confirmed that Dune: Messiah is currently in active development.

Per The Hollywood ReporterDune: Part Two's break-even target for box office revenue was $500M, a mark that it passed over two weeks ago.

Dune hit theaters in 2021 and Part Two arrived in 2024, so if WB Discovery and Denis Villeneuve maintain the same pace, Dune: Messiah should arrive in 2027.

Dune: Part Two features an exceptional cast with Timothée Chalamet starring as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.

Also appearing in supporting roles are Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, Stephen McKinley Henderson as Thufir Hawat, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring, Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam and Javier Bardem as Stilgar.

Dune: Part Two was released on March 01, 2024. The film was originally set for release on November 3, 2023 but was pushed back due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Hollywood strike.

Dune: Part Two Official Synopsis
Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Denis Villeneuve directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts based on Herbert’s novel.

Denis Villeneuve has arrived. He has joined the elite of the current Directors and Dune Part 2 is my favorite science fiction film of ALL TIME.

@Forthas - You should try watching any of the far greater science fiction films from before 2010 then kiddo. Good movie nonetheless!

Messiah, if they adapt the book well, will be even better.

When you think about it Dune starts out as basically being about intergalactic drug dealers fighting for the right to produce and sell the most popular drug in the universe. 🤷‍♂️🤣

@AnthonyVonGeek - True, although Spice is also essential for interstellar space travel too, so the wraps in an analogy not just for pharma but also for the oil barons

@AnthonyVonGeek - Spice is would be the equivalent of oil for us. Not drugs. This is the worse adaptation of the three. These movies are visually entertaining, but he completely destroyed the story. The battle for Aarakis takes about 5 years. Paul is 16 when comes to Dune and 21 when he takes the throne. it was condensed to less than 6 months. Incorporating anything from Brian Herbert's books is a HUGE mistake IMO. Dune deserves more of a GoT type of treatment. Plans within plans. It's political not just Scifi.

I watched it today. Pretty slow but from the middle of the film to the end it was epic.

@MadThanos - yeah i watched the first 30 and was reminded why i didnt finish the first film for so long. Its not bad at all, but a couple decent, short action scenes sandwiched between 30 mins of exposition does not an engaging movie make.

That said, part one picked up, and I expect the sequel to be engaging after the midway point too.

@ReverseFlasher - same story of slow start, but stick to it because I think the way they wrapped up this movie was very smart and unexpected.

Dune 2 makes $700 million on a $190 million budget.
Fans: It's a success, make a sequel.

The Batman makes nearly $800 million on the same budget.
Fans: It failed, cancel its sequel.

Logic.

@Th3Batman - I mean this is different ,people expect batman to make $700m . Not saying the Batman was a failure(of course it wasn’t) but these two things aren’t the same.

@Th3Batman - Batman had a better potential starting out. Dune as a series goes back to 1965 (book form) and is frankly not to everyone's taste. If it gets $700M+ at the BO in this climate that's pretty dang good imo. YmmV.
mountainman
mountainman - 4/7/2024, 11:16 PM
@Th3Batman - I haven’t heard any person make both of those arguments, but a franchise with more movies (Batman) is expected to perform better than one with fewer movies (Dune).
JDL
JDL - 4/8/2024, 1:39 AM
@mountainman - @Th3Batman My reaction is based 100% on actual BO relative to potential. The potential for Dune is one whole Hell of a lot less than The Batman even if we are on Batmnan # 8 and our 4th or 5th 'world'.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 4/8/2024, 7:59 AM
@Th3Batman - find me who said both of these things
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 4/8/2024, 8:01 AM
@Th3Batman - It has always been inconsistant what is considered a success or a flop but mostly relates to expectations, especialy in regard to what the execs expect and Batman is a huge brand whereas Dune was considered niche with less broad appeal and far far smaller fanbase. That and folk look at prior levels of success with a property and the prior couple of solo Batman movies passed the billion mark whereas the last Dune film prior to part one only made $30M on a $40M budget

Yeah I know but still don’t get why, he is a cool dude and I like him in interviews , but the movies I’ve seen of him , he comes off as really bland

So I was just asking cause sometimes a really good story can carry a bland actor

The first movie was good with some draggy boring parts.

The second movie was outstanding.

The casting job is one of the very best for any movie ever.

I am all in. I hope the third one is so epic, they have to back up 4 dump trucks of money to his bank so he will do a 4th movie and wrap it all up.

3 is not some immutable set in stone movie number.

@DocSpock - Dune series kind of goes in sets of 2. First 2 are Paul’s story, Next 2 are Leto’s, and next two are another reset. It sounds like he only wants to adapt the first arc. That leaves another Director to come in for Children and God Emperor.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/8/2024, 5:07 AM
@DocSpock - He should direct the first 4. The first 4 episodes of Star Wars are directed by George Lucas and (now that he's split the first book into two films) it's the same structure.

1 - He's a little boy with great powers.
2- He's a hero of the people at the start of a great war.
3- Shit does happen (spoilers).
4- the next generation.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 4/8/2024, 10:56 AM
@DocSpock - To turn it into 4 movies would kinda require turning Messiah into another two part thing. Otherwise your going into the Children which would require at least two movies after Messiah.

The Delux edition of the first book ran to almost 700 pages (although the original paperback was just over 400) whereas Messiah only was about 300 pages with less to setup when adapted so COULD likely easily turn it into a two film adaption of the second book considering what has been left out thus far from these two films but three should be enough for now.

As others have said however, once you get to the third book it is an entirely new story arc with a 12year timegap between Messiah and Children of Dune.
