It looks like The King of the Monsters and the Monarch of Skull Island are going to have more than just the Scar King to contend with in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The first trailer for the upcoming MonsterVerse sequel debuted at CCXP earlier this month, and it saw the legendary Titans joining forces to combat the greater threat of a formidable new Kaiju known as the Scar King.

Like Kong, the Scar King is believed to be another giant ape from Hollow Earth, but we had heard rumors that Godzilla would also have a villainous counterpart to face-off against, and some new tie-in merchandise has now made it official.

These new action figures not only give us our best look yet at the Scar King, but reveal a white and blue, seemingly frost-based creature known as Shimo!

Check out the merch photos at the links below.

Rebecca Hall (Dr. Ilene Andrews), Brian Tyree Henry (Bernie Hayes) and Kaylee Hottle (Jia) will reprise their roles from the previous movie, but Millie Bobby Brown and Alexander Skarsgård will not be back, with Legion alum Dan Stevens taking over as the main protagonist. Fala Chen, Alex Ferns and Rachel House also joined the cast.

Director Adam Wingard will collaborate once more with production designer Tom Hammock, editor Josh Schaeffer, and composer Tom Holkenborg. Terry Rossio is back on script duties, along with Jeremy Slater and Wingard's frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.

"This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever."

Principal photography commenced in Gold Coast, Queensland, on July 29, 2022, and officially wrapped last November. The film is scheduled to be theatrically released on April 12, 2024 after previously being slated for a March 15, 2024.

@dracula - like Marvel and DC characters: Iron man vs Iron monger, Black Panther vs Kilmonger, Superman vs Zod, Aquaman vs Orm, Hulk vs Abomination, etc.

Still excited to check it out regardless because those moments never took away from the movies for me

@dracula - Since Toho demands a separate license for the use of each of their monsters, which means extra costs beyond getting to use the Big-G himself, and King of the Monsters, which featured three pre-established Toho monsters besides Godzilla, was a big fat flop, WB/Legendary will probably stick to original creations to save on the budgets.

@dracula - I have a feeling they want godzilla and Kong to fight an evil godzilla and Kong.

But yeah, some older monsters would be great.

SuperiorHeckler - 12/27/2023, 4:48 PM
@Origame - I agree but, "older monsters" means paying TOHO additional buck$ to license those classic Kaiju. 🫤

Also, I'm getting into an argument with fireandblood. Wanna laugh at his idiocy with me?

I know that a lot of classic Toho kaijus can also be boiled down to "real-life animal, but giant", but dang it, it is frustrating how Hollywood kaiju designs are most of the time so unimaginative. If not recycling the Cloverfield monster (or "grasshoppers with skin", as I like to call them), it is just giant version of a normal animal. It's extra annoying here, because, as dracula already said above me, this movie is basically shaping up to be "a good giant lizard and monkey vs. a bad giant lizard and monkey" for seemingly no other reason than the "dark mirror image of the hero(es)" cliche.

Again, not saying that every Japanese monster is something super unique, but at the same time, with the arguable exception of some of the creatures from Pacific Rim, can you name a single Hollywood kaiju as wacky looking as Gigan, Biollante or Destoroyah?

bkmeijer1 - 12/27/2023, 4:45 PM
@FinnishDude - Destroroyah would be great to see, but I think Legendary might stick to creating their own monsters.

With Godzilla's goofy running, nothing should stop them from making their monsters look wacky though. And otherwise they could just get the Cloverfield monsters and have Godzilla, Kong and Gipsy Avenger beat the crap out of it.

@FinnishDude - I was happy to see an evil other ape thing to go against Kong and can also agree it's unfortunate if this is basically just them vs evil mirrors of themselves.

"Moncarch" has renewed my interest in these movies. I watched all of the movies after I finished the initial two-episode drop of Monarch. They are fun movies, I must admit. I thought I hated "Skull Island," but liked it after finally seeing it a second time.

MotherGooseUPus - 12/27/2023, 5:51 PM
@EZBeast - very disappointed tbh. An evil Kong and 4 legged white evil godzilla. That's just lazy and unoriginal and very underwhelming to me. Loved toho for all the original and creatures they designed. Can't we get something good like that? I'll still see this regardless but I'm very let down.

But Minus One was a masterpiece so I'm ok
EZBeast
EZBeast - 12/27/2023, 6:17 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - I am disappointed of evil kong and zilla not being a bit more grounded but at the same time I'm still excited for the monster stuff. Yeah it probably won't be epic but I hope to enjoy this film and atm it is all I can ask for...

Have you started monarch?
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 12/27/2023, 8:00 PM
@EZBeast - yea I'm also just hoping for the best at this point.

Not yet, waiting for all of it to come out so I can binge it in a few days

How is it?
EZBeast
EZBeast - 12/28/2023, 10:17 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - it has alot of it's goodwill unfortunately. The 2 lead girls in the modern setting are just so unlikable that it really is taking down the show. Also monarch is kind of dumb and it would've been way more interesting to see them as competent secretive agency dealing with learning about the titans imo.

The monsters are cool but not enough to save the show though they've teased something big happening for the finale at least.

It sucks because it started off very promising but fell into too clichéd and too unlikable...

Would still recommend checking it out but temper the expectations once episode 4 or 5 roll around.

GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 12/27/2023, 5:02 PM
Minus One is the new litmus test for Hollywood action/sci fi/adventure films: we as viewers should demand better -- certainly better than the slop that the studios have served these last 3 years or so -- and each time ask ourselves, is this new movie as good as Minus One?

Slotherin
Slotherin - 12/27/2023, 9:40 PM
@GeneralZod - kudos for Minus One living up to its hype.
With that said, I think movies are best judged for whatever they're going for.
Both seem to have a different aim so I'd rather regard each for what it is than force a comparison that's ill-suited.
