Warner Bros.' long-awaited Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened to an underwhelming $49 million domestically, but seemingly made up for it with an exceptional $130 million at the foreign box office.

While Godzilla may be king of the box office this weekend, his roar isn't exactly as mighty as many were expecting as the Michael Dougherty-helmed Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now expected to bring in $49 million domestically in its opening frame, which is a disappointing debut, to say the least.

Internationally, KOTM brought in around $130 million (approx. $70 million from China), which is also under expectations, but takes its worldwide haul to an over $179 million.

For comparison's sake, the original Godzilla opened with $196.6 million worldwide ($93.1 million domestic; $103.4M foreign) and ultimately went on to gross over $529 million by the end of its run, which currently seems like a tall order to match for its now playing sequel.

As for the rest of the domestic box office:

Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

UNO!!!

While disappointing BO numbers, I really enjoyed this kaiju fest.

They only need to hit the human element right. Not too much and not too idiotic.

@dragon316 - Here's the thing though.
1st - Many of the Godzilla movies have a strong human element because it's cheaper. Some of the most popular films have a great deal more human then Kaiju.

2nd - The Transformers can actually talk and emote. So in that case, yeah we don't need the humans as we already have the robots. The humans are superfluous. Godzilla and his kin though aren't like that. Generally they are unable to talk.

I think people would be quite angry if Godzilla was given a voice

Monsterverse R.I.P.?
I'm positive Godzilla Vs. Kong comes out next year either way, but if that doesn't do well, all bets are off. How do you screw up giant monsters punching each other? Smh

@Feralwookiee - Stupid human drama. The movie gets bogged down by stupid human drama.

@TheAmericanPatriot - Yeah. I was kinda worried about that. The human characters are NOT why we go to these flicks. Hopefully, GVK will be better and have fights that actually occur in daylight in good weather so we can actually follow the action too!

You know why ? Godzilla King of Monsters SUCKED as a movie.

Once again the monsters are barely in it. Less then Godzilla 2014 and when they are their all dark, rainy and out of focus.
