The Star Trek panel at SDCC featured exciting announcements for Strange New Worlds, including an early drop of the Lower Decks crossover episode and a teaser for the franchise's first-ever musical episode.

The Star Trek franchise has been around for decades. There have been 12 different television series along with films, video games, novels and comic books. With all of that, can you believe that there has never been a musical-themed episode in the franchise's 57-year history? Well, that's about to change.

Paramount+ revealed today that the upcoming ninth episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be a musical. The Season 2 episode, appropriately titled "Subspace Rhapsody," was teased during the Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Check out the trailer below.

While there have been musical scenes in previous Star Trek television series, this is the first full-fledged musical episode. It will feature 10 original songs plus a musical version of the series' main title. The music and lyrics for the episode were written by Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo) and Tom Polce (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). Musical episodes can often be hit or miss for television series, but I absolutely love the creative direction the showrunners so often take with Strange New Worlds.

Details for the episode were not revealed, but it appears that the crew of the Enterprise will get zapped by some space anomaly that will make them break out into song and dance. "Subspace Rhapsody" -- Season 2, Episode 9 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds -- will premiere on Paramount+ on August 3.

That wasn't the only exciting news to emerge from today's panel. In addition to the advanced screening of Episode 7 -- the highly anticipated Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks special crossover episode -- was released early. The episode will be available to stream today, July 22, starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on Paramount+ in the U.S. Here's the release schedule for the remaining episodes of Season 2:

●    Saturday, July 22 - Episode 207, “Those Old Scientists”
●    Thursday, July 27 - Episode 208, “Under the Cloak of War”
●    Thursday, August 3 - Episode 209, “Subspace Rhapsody”
●    Thursday, August 10 - Episode 210 (Season Finale), “Hegemony”

Speaking of Star Trek: Lower Decks, we also got the official trailer for Season 4 which begins streaming on September 7 on Paramount+.

Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), Tendi (Noël Wells) and the rest of the U.S.S. Cerritos crew prove they are more than just lower deckers in the official Season 4 trailer!

Musical themed episode?

I love it when Star Trek goes off the rails and becomes silly. Deep Space Nine did this perfectly with Take me out to the Holosuite and The Magnificent Ferengi.

I'm sure the usual crowd will be very upset about this.

While I do generally hate this idea...I am all in. I have enjoyed every episode of every Star Trek show, every movie(Except Star Trek 5 -UGH!!), and every comic book run.

I hope they make this so over the top stupid and goofy that I just cringe and laugh every moment for the whole hour.

The world needs some more idiocy, and even I can't provide it for the whole world all the time.

@DocSpock - I commend you for completing and enjoying Discovery, and Picard seasons 1 and 2. Props lol I love everything else! Except Star Trek Insurrection

@DocSpock - I don't HATE ST5 and I think if they hadn't hamstrung Shatner at every turn, it might have been the epic Kirkest of Kirks extravaganza of all time and I absolutely LOVE ST6 even though the cast is a combined 2300 years old.

Picard S3 restored my faith in humanity but the rest of NuTrek TV is killing it again...

@bobevanz -

I didn't think Insurrection was great nor bad. I liked it okay. It just felt too small to me. Worthy of a TV episode, not a full blown motion picture.

I watched the first epi of Star Trek with my Dad on my 9th birthday in 1966.

@Batmangina -

Some of the movies & TV shows have not been as good as others, yet Star Trek has endured since 1966. I eat it all up with the joy I remembered back in 1966.

@DocSpock - I came along a little later and after school 70s reruns of TOS are burned into my DNA along with Adam West and 60s Marvel Cartoons.

I initially thought TNG was blasphemy and didn't come around on it until way later - same with the other shows.

I've often loved the IDEA of Star Trek more than ACTUAL Star Trek outside of TOS and the first set of films.

Seeing Wrath of Khan in theaters at 13 was monumental and I still get squishy at the end.

I loved the idea of Captain Pike being the focus but the new Spock and Kirk in trailers left me cold.

Having said all of that, Picard S3 left me wanting the [frick] out of Captain 7 of 9 and crew - I also would have liked more of the Captain of the Titan - that guy was [frick]ing awesome.

@Batmangina -

You have your likes, dislikes, & favorites of the shows and movies like we all do. This sort of discussion and your 50 years of thought regarding Star Trek illustrate the essence of the whole thing.

Live long and prosper man. And Wrath of Khan is one of the greatest movies of all time.

@ObserverIO - Don't forget about Uhura singing and dancing in the sand dunes as a distraction. I actually love ST5 it has some of the best interactions between Spock, Kirk and McCoy in any of the films or movies. I wish it was better though of course.

Some people are so anal. It’s one episode people. They get “zapped” by an alien or something of that nature. So it makes perfect “Star Trek” sense.
I’m enjoying the season so far. Yes there’s things that I could complain about but it’s a tv show. Some episodes are going to be better than others. At least this is a tv series that has 16-18 episodes not 6.

It looks like even though season one was pretty good, they stupidly imported many of the awful STD writers to this show.

Now, the back talk to superior officers mirrors that on STD. The crew squabbles like the STD crew. It's all about FEEEEEEEELINGS.

This is awful. What a shame, because season one was good.

Paramount needs to give Star Trek to Malalas, because Kurtzman continues to ruin the franchise.

Tried getting into this show but I just can’t. Not gonna complain about a musical episode since one of my all time favorite episodes of TNG is the Robin Hood episode.👍🤣

I never watch Star Trek when it originally airs. I always binge watch them years after they are done, so I'll likely have forgotten about this by the time I eventually watch it in like 2027. I love Anson Mount so I've been wanting to watch this, but I just know personally from experience that Trek is better experienced in chunks, not weekly episodes. I've found that to be the case with a lot of shows.

Strange New Worlds and Picard season 3 show me they can do Nu Trek correctly, after all. The reimagined version of the old Enterprise is beautiful and is now my favorite ship ever. Really hope they give Terry Matalis that Star Trek Legacy spinoff. Discovery has just been a grim downer full of sad people on a dark ship. I hear the final season will be much lighter. Hope so but I still like it better than most of Enterprise. Lol.

Man, I’m getting worried: S1 was mostly great, but this season has been seriously uneven. The forgetting asteroids thing was just plain [frick]ing stupid, making zero sense if you thought about it for even 5 seconds, and now this shit? What the hell is going on? This show was supposed to be ST redemption after the turds that were seasons 1 & 2 of Picard and the mess that Discovery devolved into. Jesus, I’m almost out. Not [frick]ing happy, Jan.

IAmIronGland - 7/23/2023, 1:59 AM
@Tasmaniac - Sorry to hear your not in. I've thought S2 has been pretty fun. No issues with the weird plots for me. It is called STRANGE New Worlds after all and is the most like the original series. That show had gangster planets, Halloween planets, old west planets and an episode where Spock's Brain got stolen. This all seems par for the course in that regard. 🤷‍♂️ Extra points for the Brady Bunch reference.
Deklipz
Deklipz - 7/23/2023, 9:15 AM
@IAmIronGland - This show is pretty much the modern day version of the original series. Same tone and feel just bigger budget and better (in some cases) actors. Definitely the same, if not better in some places, chemistry between the cast though.
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 7/23/2023, 12:31 PM
@IAmIronGland - Not so much the weird plot as terrible writing: The radiation causes brain damage, but you just have to be shielded from it for a few minutes to get your memory back. The crew in the ship discovers they are being affected and that the asteroids are the cause, but do they retreat a short distance to regroup and then mount a rescue? Nope. Spock says “Nah, even though most of the crew is going down and we’ll all likely die if we don’t do something right now, leaving the captain and the others abandoned forever, they’re down on that planet, so we’re staying”. Seriously? WTF is that bullshit?
Also, thanks, but not a Brady Bunch reference. It’s an Aussie thing:
