2024 is the 25th anniversary of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but one actor who won't be helping to celebrate the occasion is Jake Lloyd. He played Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 movie and turned 35 on March 5; however, the mental health and legal issues he's faced over the past couple of decades are well-known.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.comScripps News recently spoke with Jake's mother, Lisa Lloyd, and learned that the child actor's issues began in high school. He started suffering from delusions and ultimately dropped out of college after he began hearing voices.

Jake has since been officially diagnosed with schizophrenia, though his issues have persisted (and were exacerbated when his sister, Madison, died of natural causes in 2018, aged only 26).

The Anakin actor unfortunately suffered a full-blown psychotic break last year while driving home from McDonald's with his mom. "He said he wanted to turn the car off," Lisa recalls. "And he turned the car off in the middle of the three lanes, and we were in the middle lane. There was a lot of yelling and screaming."

"The police got there, and they asked Jake some questions," she continued. "He was talking to them, but none of it made sense. It was all word salad."

Jake was admitted to the hospital and is now 10 months into an 18-month stay in a mental health rehabilitation facility. "He’s doing much better than I expected," his mother explains. "He is relating to people better and becoming a little bit more social, which is really nice. It's kind of like having more of the old Jake back, because he has always been incredibly social until he became schizophrenic."

Lisa revealed that Jake enjoyed the new Ahsoka series and that she gifted him an action figure of the character for his birthday. "He loves all the new 'Star Wars' stuff,” she says. "People think Jake hates 'Star Wars.' He loves it."

As for the widespread belief his role in The Phantom Menace caused these mental health struggles, she adds, "It would have happened anyway. I believe that it was genetic. And his psychiatrist also agrees that Jake was going to become schizophrenic."

"I protected him from the backlash. He was just riding his bike outside, playing with his friends. He didn't know. He didn't care. Everybody makes such a big deal about that. And it's rather annoying to me because Jake was a little kid when that came out, and he didn't really feel all that stuff because I didn't let him online."

"People say he quit [acting] because of 'Star Wars.' Well, that's not true. It didn't have anything to do with 'Star Wars.' It had more to do with our family. And we were going through a divorce," Lisa concluded. "Things were unsettled and kind of rough. And Jake didn't seem to be having a lot of fun auditioning anymore."

Needless to say, we wish Jake a speedy recovery and hope that, like Hayden Christensen, he might get to see the love he often receives from those who enjoyed The Phantom Menace and his work as the boy who eventually becomes Darth Vader.

@UniqNo - very right. When you can't even trust your own mind... That gets so ugly. Hopefully the people caring for him are able to get it under control and he can live a happy life.

@DravenCorvis - Possibly. I'd always heard before that of reports that he was bullied and given a hard time when he was a teen, but when I first heard reports of this, the mental health issues were reported as well as he want into a facility my heart when out to him.

Well at least he looks back on his time in the SW universe with good memories. Would be cool to see him come bcack in some capcity like Best did for Obi-Wan, he was good in that role.

@ModHaterSLADE - I won't EVER buy that Star Wars had nothing to do with his mental struggles. The internet wasn't as huge as it is now, but its growing over the years and poor Jake seeing over and over people tearing him apart while he was a kid ignited the fire.

I feel so bad for the dude. I pray he finishes up his 18 months and comes out as a new, improved person.
DarthAlgar

I feel bad for the kid.

Fans ridiculed him mercilessly when The Phantom Menace was released, not to mention the harassment he endured in school.

Obviously it did some real damage.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 3/12/2024, 3:30 PM
@DarthAlgar - It actually didn't. His mom shielded him from it. He was playing with friends like a normal kid. He has some mental issues he's working through that had nothing to do with Star Wars. It is a damn shame how badly a bunch of adult weirdos treated him though.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 3/12/2024, 7:02 PM
@DarthOmega - That's just her coming up with excuses. Yeah, his sister passing and dealing with his parent's divorce had to be brutal. But ain't NO WAY Jake didn't hear the bad news about him. Lots of kids his age saw the film and, being a former elementary teacher of 18 years, kids teach/say/learn from each other more than parents, family, therapists, and even the net.

Poor dude. Not his fault he was cast in the role, not his fault he was handed a stilted screenplay featuring, among other things, a Jar Jar, and certainly not his fault that he's struggled with mental health. Glad to hear he's getting the help he needs.

I understand why certain directors and actors won't get anywhere near this franchise, as its toxic fans have absolutely no shame whatsoever to go after a child of all people. What a sick community.

Funny, Ezra Miller checked himself into a mental health facility and got no support from this community.

UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/12/2024, 2:52 PM
@Baf - He has his supporters, but he also has alot of haters for good reason. The guy is a turd and uses his troubles with mental health as an excuse when it suits him.. Go watch his arrest videos...Had no respect for human beings who were actually trying to help him.
Baf
Baf - 3/12/2024, 3:13 PM
@UniqNo - Do I support Ezra's actions...no. I am neither a supporter nor hater. I only know what has been revealed online.
I know that mental illness covers more than just schizophrenia. I have seen the videos. They look and act like a mentally ill person to me. Perhaps the lack of respect was directly related to mental illness.
Baf
Baf - 3/12/2024, 3:23 PM
@BreakTheCode - Why do you ask? Seems like both people are dealing with serious mental illness yet only one gets the sympathy from this community. Because of that I can surmise that the sympathy aligns with either the type of mental illness, the actions of the mentally ill, or the ignorance about mental illness.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/12/2024, 3:29 PM
@Baf - i hear what you're saying...but at those times ezra either had capacity or was a drunk as he was never or at least i don't recall him being put on a psychiatric hold. Mental health can play a part but it doesnt excuse all of his actions....hence why 'no support from this community'.

I do hope he gets well though, at least whT he considers to be well.

Arthorious
Arthorious - 3/12/2024, 4:13 PM
@Baf - The actions that Miller did garnered the response. His actions are non excusable but glad the help is welcomed. To some extent though there has to be some accountability.
Baf
Baf - 3/12/2024, 4:14 PM
@UniqNo - I think mental health is more of a reason and less of an excuse. With that said, it's very bad if Ezra used mental health as an excuse to get out of trouble. However, if it is the reason for the trouble, it should be viewed with sympathy. This community lacks the necessary credentials to diagnose the mental stability of anyone. Especially someone they have never met. I get that Ezra didn't fit the mold of what Barry Allen should be, but many users used that narrative to justify the vilification of a person without understanding the complex nuances of mental illness.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/12/2024, 4:26 PM
@Baf - That's the thing though, it wasn't overnight...it happened over time through many diffent incidents. But you're right i don't know the individual, but you would think that someone so high profile and known to police services they would have taken more care to proper evaluate the individual...but like i said he was never put on Psychiatric hold...the same guy that people tried to held but ended up reporting him police for robbing them and then grooming someone under age.

It's part of it...not the whole of it.

Narcissistic Personality disorder maybe, there's never been any official diagnosis but that's my bet. And even then there's the whole debate on if personality disorder should even be classed as mental illness.

He's never come out to apologise for any of it as far as I'm aware but in fact doubled down on how he was not in the wrong when one of the recent cases either got dismissed or settled.

Anyway, like i said i hope he get to a good place.
Baf
Baf - 3/12/2024, 4:45 PM
@Arthorious - Miller's actions garnered over-the-top, gaslighted, negative responses from Flash fans not agreeing with the casting of Ezra. Mental illness is never an excuse, it is a (sad) reason. Miller's actions have already been excused by law because of his accountability.
Baf
Baf - 3/12/2024, 5:08 PM
@UniqNo - With what we know about the situation, I can't find fault with anything you said. I have had experience with mental illness and probably don't have to tell you that it has many forms and faces. Schizophrenia is definitely one of them and absolutely deserves sympathy, but I thought it a juxtaposition to see the reactions on this thread compared to Ezra's. I see both as clear cases of mental illness, both deserving sympathies.

rkshuttleworth - 3/12/2024, 5:45 PM
@UniqNo - Every human being does stupid things because we all occasionally have mental problems. It doesn't excuse any of our choices, but to understand other human beings and at least empathize with what leads to people's bad behaviour would be nice for all of us to do even if we can't condone what people do.

This is very sad. My favorite part of Phantom Menace was him in the Pod Race. The rest of the movie mostly sucked. But back then, fans were beating the little boy like the crummy movie was his fault. And then later, he becomes so ill.

I wish him nothing but the best.
