Villains like Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus looked more or less the same after arriving on Earth-616 in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the movie's concept artists reveal that MCU overhauls were considered.

Spider-Man: No Way Home brought Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and Lizard into the MCU. While Max Dillon received a much-needed change in appearance, the rest of the villains looked largely the same (at least until Norman Osborn acquired a few upgrades for the final battle).

In the newly released Spider-Man: No Way Home - The Art of the Movie book, there are a number of alternate designs for the villains, some of which we've already shared here.

It also features comments from Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding in which he explains scrapped plans to overhaul the costumes of each member of the threequel's sinister quintet.

"We did a lot of work on different types of tentacles," he says of Doc Ock. "There were previous drafts of the script where he was going to actually have time to upgrade himself using Marvel Cinematic Universe tech. So what would that look like?"

"There are versions by many different artists, and the overarching notion was that they just get a little bit of a re-skin that makes [the villains] feel a little bit more part of the MCU." Understandably, the decision was later made to leave them, Ock, and his tentacles "more or less untouched."

The book also features a brilliant shot exploring Earth-616 Peter Parker's newfound friendship with Otto Octavius (you can check it out below) and Senior Concept Modeler Adam Ross had a good reason for dreaming up what looks like a bizarre moment on the surface.

"Instead of being so serious all the time, I just liked the idea that maybe he was a more jovial person after all the crazy was taken away," the artist explains. "Every time we've seen him before, his tentacles are always tearing stuff up, being used to destroy."

"I just liked the idea of him using them to pour some chocolate milk, or to create a couch. I gave Doc Ock more of that professor look, and I just called this piece "the talk.' I wanted Peter to feel very uncomfortable like Doc Ock is trying to educate him in the ways of the world."

How about this: Don't bring up characters from other franchises and change them to your liking. Instead, introduce your version of these characters and have them dress however you like.

That's not true at all? We knew what he was like as a person before tentacles in Spider-Man 2. Have these people even seen the movies?

Never understand why these people think they can do something better when these characters have existed for years and have been and still are hugely popular. As the old saying goes ‘if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it’

@Spike101 - Most people's takeaway from this movie is that they redeemed Andrew Garfield's spiderman. They improved green goblin's dumb costume. And all the other villains they used were from critically panned movies, but this movie broke box office records. What the heck are you even saying?

@Spike101 - Part of the creative process is exploring all options and seeing what does and doesn’t work within the context of the story being told

@UncleHarm1 - Spider-Man 2 was critically panned was it? What the hell are you smoking?

@newhire13 - Yes that’s fair. I guess that being that they only moved to address the things that weren't very comic accurate like the goblins mask and the whole of electro it kind of proves my point.

I know this possibility grow thinner by the day, but I still hope for proper MCU versions of these characters played by new actors.

As much as I loved Defoe'Green Goblin and Molina's Doc Ock, I would really like to see the MCU's original Norman Osborn and Otto Octavius, becoming Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus, yet fundamentally different from Raimi's variants.

And just because I really like fancasts, here is a really old archive picture of future bussiness geniuses Tony Stark (now defunct) and Norman Osborn back in the 80's during one of their famous college parties.

It seems like ever since Stan Lee left us all these “writers” and creatives want to do is whatever the hell they want with his characters. There’s a lot of narcissists working at marvel studios it seems like who think they can do better and have better ideas than the legend. For example I have a feeling Stan Lee would look at the new “smart hulk” and shake his head and say they completely miss the point of the character. Everyone has to be all cheerful and happy and have great comedic timing? So fkn boring.

@Matchesz - How much pull do you think Stan Lee had????

@Matchesz - Should be noted that Stan Lee had 0 input on those movies

I was upset that it wasn't the Sinister Six working together and when I saw the final fight it made sense why. The only reason all the villains showed up was for the box. And the only reason Goblin showed up was to kill and harass Spider-Man.

As much as I loved seeing DeFoe's Green Goblin and Molina's Doctor Octopus in No Way Home, I think the next Spider-Man trilogy should introduce the MCU's original Norman Osborn and Otto Octavius as civilian characters before eventually becoming Green Goblin and Doc Ock.https://comicbookmovie.com/spider_man/fan-cast-spider-verse-rogues-gallery-and-supporting-cast-in-the-mcu-a197766#gs.6s2lon
