Aside from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield making their grand returns as Spider-Man in No Way Home, seeing Willem Defoe coming back as the notorious Green Goblin did not disappoint the fans in the slightest.

The hatred between Spider-Man and Green Goblin was at an all-time high in this film, as Willem Defoe portrayed the Goblin so malevolently, that no doubt Spider-Man: No Way Home will be regarded as one of Dafoe's most iconic roles.

When the creative team was developing how the Green Goblin's classic suit would look for the film, they were inspired as far as to drawing up some concept art, in which we can see that at one point there were talks of Norman Osborn wearing the Mark VI Ironman armor from Ironman 2 and The Avengers.

The concept art design is featured in the Spider-Man: No Way Home - The Art of the Movie artbook, where we can see Norman Osborn riding around in his augmented suit on a Mysterio holo-drone from Spider-Man: Far From Home

Another abstract design of a potential suit upgrade for the Green Goblin showcases a more "comic-accurate" color palette, where the Ironman armor is now painted a prominent purple color, much like Green Goblin's classic color scheme from the comics, with the addition of the suits rocket leg-boosters.

Many fans believe this design is a nod to the Iron Patriot armor Norman wore in the pages of the Dark Avengers run in the comics.

Would you have liked to have seen this suit in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

With Spider-Man's identity now revealed, our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life as Peter Parker from the high stakes of being a superhero. When Peter asks for help from Doctor Strange, the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.

@Twenty23Three - All tech right now is either from Stark, Wakanda, Pym or teenagers with a basement junk.

@GhostDog - It's concept art...concept artists are told to make everything and anything. Most of it is tossed aside. It's just a fast way to ideate and see what works and doesnt. You're meant to put out all your good and bad ideas.

You throw hundreds of ideas out and sees what resonates. It's literally one of the first steps in the creative process for anything.

Oh hell naw! Glad they stuck with what we got.

Interesting concept but the hooded looked worked WAY more. My only criticism is I wish he had golden goggles instead of black so it would call back more to his Goblin mask, or maybe the broken up Goblin mask covering the top half of his face but not his mouth. Idk, something along those lines - but I have no problem with what we ended up with as Dafoe's facial acting was amazing

@KelvTwelve - ever since seeing his broken mask, I kept thinking it actually could have worked broken as well.

@JohnPain - Mary, Jesus and Joseph... YES!!! That would be wonderful IMO and just add a little battle-damage to it since every actor MUST show a significant part of their faces anyway. 😃

@JohnPain - I prefer the movie's mask.

@MartianManHuntr - I can see why they didn't, though in action it doesn't look bad. I don't see much of a purpose though to Norman making a latex mask. When I was young and first saw the movie I even questioned where Norman got the armor mask.

@JohnPain - Though maybe using the mask as a more ritualistic thing would give more credence to why Norman would wear it.

@MartianManHuntr -

That’s not really a mask. More of a mutant transformation.

MartianManHuntr
MartianManHuntr - 7/28/2023, 6:23 AM
@JohnPain - I think it was being developed as mask he would wear than the one he wore with open mouth. But even if they had gone with mutating when goblin is in control and turning green, would have worked for me. Willem Dafoe Is phenomenal actor and he would have crushed it.

@dagenspear - They can show that glider required to wear a helmet but after turning into GG Norman went with a wicked helmet.

All Marvel/Spiderman/comic fans complain about in the new spiderman movies is that his villains are connected to ironman. So they go and come up with concepts of turning green goblin into ironman. I think the problem the MCU is having is not listening to the fans even just a little bit.

It's mind boggling that with all their creativity, all their experience adapting the comic characters to the big screen, all the supposed Midas-Touch of Kevin Feige and company and yet, they remain utterly clueless on just what the f**k to do with Green Goblin's mask and costume. SMH 😳

I still don't get why no one thought to at least turn his skin green. The failed cure practically set it up. That way they could've kept Willem Dafoe's face and remained comic accurate at the same time.
Slotherin

@MasterMix - normally I'm not big on GG being physically mutated, but that could have worked!

I didn’t think you could make the power gobby armor worse but that definitely would have done it. Why oh why is it so hard to make the psychopath put on a freaky Halloween costume? If that iron gobby was the alternative then at least they chose the purple hoodie

SonOfAGif - 7/27/2023, 10:12 PM
Absolutely not! And I'm an Iron Man fanboy. They need to stop trying to weave Iron Man into every villain. Electro makes sense because he was craving the power of the arc reactor like a drug. But Green Goblin? Absolutely not.

what upsets me the most about this is thats the im2 armor. my favorite.

My eyes!!!!

Though let's not forget that they often get concept artists to draw all kinds of weird things just to see what they could look like. So I'm hoping this was never actually seriously considered. But with all the Stark tie ins it wouldn't be surprising.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 7/28/2023, 1:28 AM
NO! I'm glad they didn't do this. What they did worked well. A damaged version of his costume from the original film with no mask so Willem Dafoe can actually emote.
ThouBear8
ThouBear8 - 7/28/2023, 3:11 AM
Honestly, SO GLAD they didn't go with it. I understand why it was mocked up by the concept artist, but it's a way less interesting look than the one they went with, not to mention that it removes Iron Man from being a part of yet another Holland Spidey villain.

I could see how being in part of Tony's suit could really mess with Peter's head as to who his 'father figure' is.
