Spider-Man returned to theaters yesterday, and Sam Raimi's 2002 classic managed to swing to impressive heights at the U.S. box office. Footage of fans reacting to the final swing has also gone viral...

As part of Sony Pictures' "Spider-Mondays," each of the web-slinger's live-action movies will be re-released over the next 8 weeks. It started yesterday with Spider-Man, a movie which swung into theaters over two decades ago, way back in 2002.

It's all part of the studio's 100th-anniversary celebrations; while the majority of comic book fans would prefer to see Spider-Man return to Marvel Studios, the wall-crawler remains a huge part of Sony's slate and is a property they're unlikely to ever part ways with.

Regardless, moviegoers keen to either experience Spider-Man on the big screen for the first time (or for the first time in literal decades - feel old yet?) managed to rack up an impressive $680,000 in 466 U.S. theaters yesterday.

Needless to say, it's going to be very interesting to see which of these Spider-Man movies ultimately comes out on top!

Sam Raimi has repeatedly expressed an interest in returning to helm Spider-Man 4 after walking away from the movie in 2010. The filmmaker couldn't make the version he wanted in the time allowed and lost his passion for the character after Ari Arad shoehorned Venom into Spider-Man 3

We don't expect the sequel to ever actually become a reality, but Tobey Maguire will likely reprise his role as Peter Parker in an upcoming Multiversal MCU project (Avengers: Secret Wars, for example).

Recently, we spoke with Dylan Baker about playing Dr. Curt Connors in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, and he told us this about the experience:

"Well, you know, I remember the first scene I had was on the campus of Columbia University in New York. So, I went up there and we worked for six or seven hours and, as I left, I think I had a cell phone at the time, I can’t remember, or when I got home, all of a sudden, my friend called me up" and said, ‘There are these pictures of you online.’ ‘What are you talking about?’ ‘You’re in Spider-Man!’ I said, ‘How do you know that?’"

"I went to where he was looking and there were pictures online already of the scene we did today of me and Tobey! I had no idea they could happen that fast. It was just crazy, but really fun. I got more into the effects in Spider-Man 3 with that glob and running all over and everything, and having to do all of that. Yeah, it was really fun. It was a lot of fun."

Footage of fans losing their minds over Spider-Man's final swing has also gone viral today; check that out in the X post below.

Watts ain't Raimi and Giacchino ain't Elfman, 0 sauce in the MCU Spidey, let's hope they change some shit with the...i'm gonna call it "relaunch".

@Doomsday8888 -

Yeah I agree. Both are crazy weak compared to Raimi and Elfman.

@Doomsday8888 - When it comes to the scores honestly I think all composers brought a special feel to the films. Love all of them.

@Doomsday8888 - I actually think Giacchino is a better composer but his Spider-Man music is worse

@Doomsday8888 - Raimi's horror background was always perfect for a hero that was a spider and had gallery of animal/insect rogue villains. Elfman building on what he did in Batman and other projects with Burton was topping on the cake.

Spider-man 4 could make close to a billion if the trailers looked good.

If Sony were smart - they’d green light Spider-Man 4 after the hype of No Way Home, and now fans can distinguish the multiverse. Especially if Holland’s future is up in the air with the MCU right now, would be a nice little pay off for Tobey. Plus a middle aged Spidey trying to keep his life together and raise kids actually would be pretty fun.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - besides Spiderverse , they have shown they aren’t really smart though…

I would rather have that then the SUMC films honestly

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I don’t understand it.

Sony can literally can create a banner film series “Tales From The Spider-Verse” to help people understand that these aren’t necessarily “new” spider-man films; but ones revisiting the spider-verse concept in live action.

“Tales From The Spider-Verse: Spider-Man 4”

They can do Spider-Man 2099 in live action that way too.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - well, at least we could get an actually aged looking Parker without having to wait for forever youthful Holland to get there in another 10 years.

There's an audience reaction video on YouTube of Spider-Man back in 2002 that you can watch if you're into that kinda stuff.

The greatest superhero movie ever made to date. The first Spider-Man is phenomenal. I'm so glad I got to see it on the big screen again last night. It's pretty much a perfect movie, and the second one is a perfect sequel.

@HermanM - yeah. No. Good movie. But let's leave the hyperbole at home.

@HermanM - I love the first, but Spider-Man 2 is the gold standard for the superhero movie, imo.

For my money, it has yet to be topped.
HermanM
HermanM - 4/16/2024, 1:57 PM
@McMurdo - no hyperbole, it is the best to date, in my opinion. It is the quintessential superhero movie and more comics accurate/better representation of its characters than the first Reeve Superman film, which is why it gets the top spot.

@SheepishOne - Absolutely right. Spider Man 2 is as close to a perfect super hero movie as anyone can possibly get. Certainly it’s the best Spider Man film ever made at this point.
HermanM

@SheepishOne - Many people agree, I think it is the perfect sequel and just as good as the first.
JonC
JonC - 4/16/2024, 6:05 PM
@SheepishOne - the milkiness of the parker/mj relationship is so off-putting for me to say that about either of these movies. if they would have pulled that relationship together better i would say yes. but mj is this forever wall flower and parker doesn't have the balls to commit to her not because of villains but because he comes off awkward and poor in relationships. i need a strong mj that's starts noticing parker because of the changes spiderman is bringing out in him which gives him the courage to connect with her. then add in the tension of knowing it is wrong due to constant peril and keep that going in the movie as part of the dynamic.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 4/16/2024, 11:37 PM
@JonC - But you're describing their relationship almost exactly in both 1 and 2.

MJ knows Peter because he lives next door, but him getting spider powers allows him to become this more prominent figure in her life and step out of the shadows. He knocks Flash out in front of her. He catches her when she slips in the cafeteria and catches all of her food on the tray. She sees that he's strong, but also elusive. Always showing up late and running off etc. She gradually moves closer to him over the course of the film while also growing closer to Spider-Man, which culminates in her kissing Peter in the end, only to be rejected because he is afraid of putting her life in danger. He's awkward because Peter Parker is awkward, but that isn't why he and MJ aren't on the same page.

It's only when he rejects Spider-Man in number 2 that he feels he can finally deserve her. And the ultimate irony is that, while MJ was captured by the Goblin bc of Spider-Man, she is captured by Octavius bc of Peter. Rejecting Spider-Man does not save her. It only means there's no one to protect her if he stays suppressed.

Idk what movies you watched, but Peter's commitment to her has nothing to do with awkwardness.

Cool , that clip was nice too since it’s a great way to end the film and leaves you on a high…

Anyway , doubt we will get a Spider Man 4 honestly but stranger things have happened so we’ll see.

I did like 2 out of 3 of the films ( and the third one had its moments) so get back Raimi back and I would be down for it…

However if it also never happened then I would be fine with it aswell since NWH gave me closure with Tobey’s version as the elder statesman of the 3.

I got my ticket to see Spider-Man 3. I know it's not the best of the Raimi trilogy but it's the only Spider-Man movie I missed seeing in theaters.

I was supposed to go but it's at a theater that's way farther than I usually go. I just hope the reception is good enough for them to do it yearly like WB does for the old Batman movies

I know the common sense says that SM2 is the GOAT, but for me, the first film means so much. X-Men and Spider-Man was the responsibles for the genre be this giant juggernaut in 2024

I got to meet Raimi in Cleveland this past weekend. He signed my replica Amazing Fantasy 15 from the Spidey 1 DVD box set. I told him how watching that movie got me into comics as a young teen, and how cool it was to look up Spider-Man 2’s website and see Doc Ock now that I knew who the different villains are. He seemed like a really cool guy and fellow comics nerd. Easily top two celeb interactions I’ve had at cons.

@EarlChai - I had the pleasure of meeting him myself last April at a con as well. Completely agree. He is one of the absolute nicest people I've ever met at one of those. Very soft spoken, very polite. Really humble and gracious, a solid dude through and through.
