Paramount Pictures' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie is now in theaters, and we're breaking down the animated reboot's biggest moments, surprises, and reveals.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, major spoilers follow.

Between the original comics and multiple relaunches, various animated series, and live-action adaptations, the Turtles' origins and "established" lore have undergone numerous alterations over the years, but Mutant Mayhem makes some bold changes that we haven't seen before - especially when it comes to the Heroes in a Half-Shells' overall character arcs - that may not sit well with long-time fans.

Some minor retcons include making Splinter a random New York rat (no Hamato Yoshi) who learns martial arts from watching movies, and basically erasing the origins of supporting characters such as Wingnut, Leatherhead, Mondo Gecko and Bebop and Rocksteady by making them all Baxter Stockman's experiments and members of Superfly's "family."

But it's the very end that we can see the TMNT faithful taking issue with.

After saving the city from Superfly and becoming accepted as heroes, Mikey, Leo, Raph and Donnie ditch their signature bandanas and enrol in high school with April O'Neil. While this does feel like the most logical way to end this particular story, it also drastically alters the Turtles' status as heroic outcasts, constantly seeking acceptance while also striking from the shadows as the city's mysterious protectors.

If a sequel happens, we're sure the Fearsome Foursome will suit-up to fight crime again, but this just seems more like something that should have been saved for the final film in the franchise.

What do you think? Did you have a problem with Mutant Mayhem ending on this note? Be sure to drop us a comment down below.

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

They keep steering away from origins/mythos that they will end up being unrecognizable to what made TMNT great in the first place.

@Matador - that origin has been told in over a thousand different versions of TMNT. there is no problem with them switching some aspects up for this new iteration. otherwise you just re-releasing the same thing over and over and over each time they want to reboot franchises. so if you dont change anything up then whats the point of a reboot. just continue the old story. that's why they make changes. just go for the ride and remember the OG lore is still there and not going anywhere.

@supermanrex - If you say so and yet this iteration still doesn't look good but that's my opinion alone.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

I heard in this version that they learn their martial arts styles from copying it on tv. Please tell me this was a very bad dumb rumor...
Henchman4Hire
Henchman4Hire - 8/2/2023, 9:52 AM
@EZBeast - They don't so much copy what they see on TV as they watch actual martial arts instructional videos over the course of several years, while training together.
bobevanz
bobevanz - 8/2/2023, 10:08 AM
@EZBeast - what makes more sense: a rat that learned Kung fu from a book, and can somehow read, or watching something on TV and copying it lol
EZBeast
EZBeast - 8/2/2023, 10:19 AM
@bobevanz - oh I absolutely despised that in the Bay film as well but this isn’t exactly an improvement…

@EZBeast - henchman is lying. They watch ONE 80s video on martial arts self defense and then it's a montage of old Shaw Brothers Kung Fu movies footage.

So yes, they absolutely do learn from watching TV.

As one of these long-time TMNT fans, I'm perfectly happy with the changes they made and couldn't be more excited about a version of the Turtles where they're in high school. The thing to understand about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2023 is that there are always going to be new adaptations. Mutant Mayhem is the fourth big screen movie universe. There have been half a dozen different cartoons. Several different comic book versions. Video game versions that also have their own continuity.

It's endless and it's nothing to get worked up over if a new adaptation tries out some new things or goes down its own path. If the new ideas don't interest you then just don't watch. Wait 5 years and there will be a new adaptation that maybe follows some of the older continuity, if that's all you want.

@Henchman4Hire - I have no problem with changes to the lore (there's already been so many different takes anyway over the years), but to me, this felt more like fundamentally altering an important part of the characters themselves and what has always motivated them. Still loved the movie overall, but that ending just didn't work for me.
Himura
Himura - 8/2/2023, 4:43 PM
@Henchman4Hire - THIS. It's such a great adaptation for a modern era. Like, why wouldnt a bunch of teenagers growing up in the age of YouTube and TikTok not be acting like this?

And if a rat can learn karate just by watching his master while in a cage, even before he was mutated, then they can learn from martial arts films too.

@Henchman4Hire - But but but... no, damn it, no! If they don't change things then I'll have nothing to get angry about and I need, I NEED somewhere to direct my outrage over... over... being outraged! Well, on the plus side, there's always politics.

Hey, long time fan here. Loved the mirage comics, the movies , the shows and absolutely adored this version. They probably did it cause they weren't sure they'd get a sequel but a series has been announced that will cover the turtles' story leading up to this movie as well. TMNT Mutant mayhem, The First Slam Dunk and Spiderverse show its's been a phenomenal year for animation.

A very solid entry for this new iteration. I still hate all the product placement name dropping, but that's only a critical nitpick. Everything else was great

What so they are in high school as mutant turtles?? Or do have like an image inducer type thing to look human?

I feel like modern incarnations across the board seem to hate the 'secret identity' aspect of superhero lore. Which to me has always been the source of the best story lines so it's not something i'm glad to see.
Toonstrack

@TheManWithoutFear -

1. No disguises, everhone in the school knows who they are.

2. The turtles literally aren't even secret in the comics anymore, haven't been for a while.

Saw it last night with my two boys (3&7) they liked it but I gotta say I was bored the entire time. Story was awful and barely there. The turtles voices were awful and they CONSTANTLY talked over each other. All the villains are wasted. Each one has like 2 lines and don't do anything of note. As a lifelong fan and someone who lives and breathes TMNT, this was a huge misfire. It's sloppy and rushed.
Himura
Himura - 8/2/2023, 4:46 PM
@Waifuslayer - Your two boys liked the film but you think it was a misfire? You literally went with the intended target audience and still have such an close minded opinion about movies. It wasnt made for you lmao

Clearly it wasnt a misfire if your kids liked it.
Waifuslayer
Waifuslayer - 8/2/2023, 5:58 PM
@Himura - it's a misfire bevause it's boring, irritating and sloppy. There is NO STORY. It's like they meet the villain and are in the final battle (don't get me started on that part) within 25 minutes.

I went in with a totally open mind and it failed to be entertaining. That script never should have been approved. Have you even seen it?
Waifuslayer
Waifuslayer - 8/2/2023, 6:01 PM
@Himura - and [frick] off with this "it wasn't made for you" bullshit. I've been supporting the franchise for 35 years, asshole.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 8/3/2023, 9:16 PM
@Waifuslayer - "No story" yet what was April's arc of redeeming her image because she puked in her first ever broadcast at school and wanting to find Superfly to expose him and get her school dance to be uncancelled? Splinter coming to terms that his amount of helicopter parenting on the Turtles was a parallel to how Superfly led his mutant family and something he didn't want to become? The reason why the Turtles want to capture Superfly to be accepted for their actions instead of their appearance?

They first got to know more about Superfly's motives before the final battle happened. Other stuff happens that you are leaving out like getting captured by the TCRI.

The only thing I agree with you is how the Turtles do constantly talk over each other, it's something that also annoys me in the Spider-Verse films but to say there is no story is incorrect.

Hated the ending (part of it atleast) but the origin didn’t bother me. It’s just as ridiculous as a rat throwing punches and kicks in a cage and somehow becoming a ninja master. They both work within the context of their story though.
Waifuslayer
Waifuslayer - 8/2/2023, 6:00 PM
@newhire13 - the ending was easily the worst part of it. I was mostly with the movie until they met Supa Fly and then it nosedived.
