During a production kickoff event that yours truly was able to attend today, director Steven Caple Jr. officially revealed that his upcoming Transformers sequel will officially be titled Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and, as rumored, will finally introduce Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the billion-dollar franchise.

Caple also revealed that the film will take place in 1994, so it won't overlap with the previous six installments, and will primarily be set in New York City - specifically Brooklyn. The action will also take the robots in disguise to Machu Picchu in Peru.

Optimus Prime will be the lead robot hero of the film, this time sporting an absolutely awesome G1 design, and Peter Cullen will be back to provide his voice. This film will serve as an origin story of sorts for the character as it explores his first true adventure on Earth and see him become the legendary leader we know and love.

Bumblebee will also be back, with a new vehicle design that's an off-road Camaro variant of his usual look. It picks up several years after the events of his solo film, but the ending of that film will directly feed into the beginning of this one.

The roster also features Mirage, who transforms into a Porsche 911, and a pair of new female characters in Arcee, who transforms into a Ducati 916, and the Terrorcon Nightbird, who has switched allegiances and transforms into a black-and-purple Nissan GTR.

Scourge will be the main villain of the piece, a massive orange-and-black Decepticon who takes the symbols from his victims and fuses them onto his body as trophies.

As for the titualr Beasts, we saw concept art for Airazor (falcon), Rhinox (rhinoceros), and Optimus Primal (gorilla) - all of whom will have a key role to play. More will be revealed in the coming months.

Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback will be the human leads of the film. Ramos is playing an ex-military character named Noah who is always hustling and is a bit of a tech wiz while Fishback is playing Elena, a museum researcher.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to open in theaters on June 24, 2022.

Returning to the action and spectacle that first captured moviegoers around the world 14 years ago with the original Transformers, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure and introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons. Directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, the film arrives in theatres June 24, 2022.

@KingPatel - So is it a sequel to Bumblebee?

@SonOfAGif - From what they told us, all the films are in the same continuity, this one just takes place in 1994

@KingPatel - I don't get why they're still so wishy washy about BB being a reboot, it very clearly is: different director, different aesthetic, different timeline of events, different designs, different backstory. what's up with that "all in the same continuity" nonsense?

@Spidey91 - I think BB is meant to be seen as a soft reboot, almost in the vain of X-Men: First Class.

@Spidey91 -

They're all very loosely connected at this point - maybe just leaving the door open if they ever decide to revisit present day - but this one does directly pick up after the events of Bumblebee, his new design is inspired by the end of that film, although it's a completely different Camaro.

@KingPatel - well, at the very least that's good. it's just....I can't take Bayformers anymore, Bumblebee was the one to reignite my spark (ha!) of interest for this franchise after the ending of Prime.

@Spidey91 - yeah if g1 was so popular how is bumblebee never made billion how is it cartoon comics toys video games could never ever make transformers popular all over again , and take people who where never ever fans of transformers and turned them into transformers fans new fans and both his sequels made billion back to back 3 positive things that bay did be proud of instead of always looking bad thing stupid [frick]ing things look at positive for once be proud of it

Really? Mirage is the porsche instead of Jazz?
inkniron
inkniron - 6/22/2021, 12:26 PM
@MCUKnight11 - Exactly what I came here to say. Mirage was an F! racer and seeing as it's a prequel, they need to bring Jazz back anyway. It was dirty killing him off in the first one.
MCUKnight11
MCUKnight11 - 6/22/2021, 12:29 PM
@inkniron - For movie reasons he should have stayed a Ferrari for this. I actually prefer it over the F1 racer.

inkniron - 6/22/2021, 12:34 PM
@MCUKnight11 - For sure. Can't have and F! running the streets. That's a dead giveaway he's a robot in disguise. Then again, nothing suspicious about all the high end cars running in a pack either...
MCUKnight11
MCUKnight11 - 6/22/2021, 12:38 PM
@inkniron - Honestly, G1 had a bunch of high end cars too. Porsche 935,Lancia Stratos, 3 lamborghini countaches...
inkniron
inkniron - 6/22/2021, 12:42 PM
@MCUKnight11 - That's what I was saying. maybe the sarcasm didn't come through. G1 was chock full of high end stuff. Bay took it even further.

Michael Bay has killed any potential for this franchise without a rock hard reboot. The prequel they already did still bears too much of his DNA in it and they'll forever be dancing around Bay's continuity and characterization.

I'm not sure the franchise even really works in live action. They're forced to put so much spotlight on human characters who (even at the best of times) render the transformers little more than sidekicks...

Imagine a Transformers franchise written by Jonathan Nolan and directed by his brother, though.
