Total Film Magazine has shared a new official look at Marvel Studios' Echo, spotlighting Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez alongside Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin...

Maya Lopez and Wilson Fisk didn't exactly part on good terms in the Hawkeye season finale (she shot him in the face), but based on what we saw in the recent trailer for Echo, the Kingpin will reach out to his "niece" in an attempt to put the past behind them and reconcile their considerable differences.

Something tells us Maya will be less ready to forget about the villain's actions, but it looks like she will at least be willing to hear him out.

Total Film Magazine has now shared a new still from the upcoming Disney+ series, giving us another look at Lopez and Fisk sitting down for a little chat. This scene could be a flashback, however - it's hard to tell since Fisk took the bullet in his left eye.

Echo will be Marvel's first TV-MA rated show, and it will also be the first project under a new banner known as Marvel Spotlight, which takes its name from an anthology comic book series that debuted back in 1971 and was the origin of beloved Marvel characters like Ghost Rider and Spider-Woman.

“Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity," said Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum. "Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

"Marvel Studios presents Echo in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) aka Kingpin," reads the most recent synopsis. "In the first episode, we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles."

In addition to Cox, D'Onofrio and Cox (Charlie), the show will also star Chaske Spencer as Henry, Tantoo Cardinal as Chula, Graham Greene as Skully, Cody Lightning as Cousin Biscuits, Devery Jacobs as Bonnie, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez.

The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez (Cox), whose ruthless behaviour in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

All five episodes of Echo will stream on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2024.

That trailer was pretty 🔥, but I’ve been fooled before. Waffles are easily manipulated.

Gonna take a leap of blind faith on this one

I liked Hawkeye a lot, & I liked her character in it.

I am kinda excited for this.

What I really want? Spider-Man 5/6 to have Daredevil, Kingpin, Echo, Bullseye, & Tombstone in it.

Make it so Feige.

@DocSpock - a more grounded, street level Spidey sounds amazing. And I’m sure Feige/Marvel have this in mind.

Not sure if Sony will play ball there though. They’re trying hard to make his own Universe happen. So every story has to be “big” and world ending with them.

Spider-Man films could also be really cheap given the location/material/VFX needed.

@Blergh -

That all makes so much sense that you know Sony & Mickey the Rat will either never do it or totally furk it all up.

@DocSpock - I kinda already wanna see that in Spider-Man 4. Given the current slate of movies, Born Again might still premiere before SM4's release despite the rework. And that is where I wanna see Echo and Bullseye show up again.

The Spider-Man movie itself can then focus on Spider-Man and Daredevil teaming up to defeat Kingpin with Scorpion as his muscle. Tombstone could work as a cold open

That all sounds good to me.

@bkmeijer1 - Totally agree and have been saying something similar for a while. Yeah, they can open with Spidey taking down Tombstone and his gang as Spidey's trying to work his way up the criminal ladder in NYC, having no idea that the guy running for mayor is behind it all because he doesn't know who Kingpin is but he thinks he's a good guy (initially). DD obviously knows who Fisk is, but Peter doesn't know DD is Matt and Matt doesn't remember who Spidey is, so maybe they have some friction initially over DD's more brutal methods and the fact that he's targeting Kingpin. Ultimately when Fisk rolls out his "anti-vigilante" laws that Spidey and DD end up teaming up to take him down. Or maybe they end on a cliffhanger where they don't succeed and the law is put into place making them, the Punisher, Echo, etc. all outlaws. Wouldn't be the first time they leave us hanging.

Oh, and also, I definitely think that they should have Black Cat/Felicity in it as well to mess with Peter's personal life, as MJ and Ned should be off at MIT at that time. That is unless they both go the total freshman "I'm free to do what I want!" route, party their asses off, get kicked out of school, and are back in NYC with MJ working at that donut shop at the front counter with Ned making the donuts. Oh, and she's pregnant. With Ned's kid. Because... it was time to make the donuts.

Okay okay, just let me pay my tab and I'll go. What? Just go? Okay okay. Jeeze.

bkmeijer1 - 12/8/2023, 2:30 AM
@StSteven - I'm not sure I'm a fan of that last point l, but seeing Black Cat show up would be pretty neat as well. Maybe she initially works for Fisk, but once he puts out the bounty on all vigilantes she switches sides
StSteven
StSteven - 12/8/2023, 5:07 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah I'm not a fan of that last point either and REALLY don't want to think about Ned and MJ getting it on (and neither does Zendaya I'm guessing). But, hey, you know, it's college and Ecstasy is a helluva drug.

ANYHOW, yeah I think that Felicity would make for an interesting character and the type that we haven't seen Peter encounter before (in any of the Spidey movies, MCU or Sony) so far. That kind of femme fatale who is smooth and cunning and you're not sure who's side she's on, and the dynamic between her and Spidey could be a lot of fun to watch, especially if Peter is still that kind of awkward, unsure of himself guy, particularly around women and even mores strong women. And I like your idea of her starting off working for Fisk and then switching sides when he passes that law or whatever, particularly if she has a thing for Spidey and he's like Fisk's most wanted (along with DD).

But one other point picking up on what I was saying about Peter's personality: it will be interesting to see how he's portrayed in the next movie/trilogy. Considering that he'll most likely be in college (and probably at least somewhat through it given the amount of time that has passed), and after everything that he's been through, hopefully he'll be portrayed as more mature and confident as both Peter and Spidey. I mean, I still want him to have that boyish charm and I don't want to see him act like Tony or anything, but I'd think by that point he'd logically be more adult personality-wise (but still has NO idea how to deal with someone like Felicity).
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/8/2023, 5:45 PM
@StSteven - I think Felicity messing stuff up in Peter's world would be really interesting to watch, especially as if it's done in a way not yet done on the big screen.

I kinda wanna see Peter really be this smart kid (we only really got glimpses of that), but the introduction of Felicity/Black Cat could really mess with him in that aspect. All of the sudden, he's a complete fool again not knowing how to act around her.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/8/2023, 6:03 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, like just when Peter thinks he has everything in his life under control and things seem normal and manageable along comes Felicity and just turns things upside down. Could be a lot of fun, especially if they lean into the "luck/bad luck" aspect that she sometimes has in the comics. Not saying they go full-on mutant like Domino, but just enough for Peter to know she's trouble because bad things seem to happen to him when he's around her but he can't help himself.

And, yeah, I also hope we get to see that genius side of him explored more, especially now that he should be in college where he can major in (presumably) some science field where he can really spread his wings. Plus he should have access to a lot more impressive tech to work with on a collegiate level that high school, not necessarily for Spidey (because we've already seen that) but for Peter as an aspiring scientist. Until Felicity happens to be walking past one day and his lab blows up. With him in it 😉.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/8/2023, 6:22 PM
@StSteven - that would be quite a way to go. Luckily that never happened to me. I want Spider-Man to be relatable (yes, I too want a relatable superhero as a smart STEM university kid that loses all sense around "bad luck" girls), but not that relatable.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/8/2023, 11:23 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Oh yeah I totally want Peter to be relatable regardless of what stage of his life he's in, as that's part of his charm. And most of us have had weird/bad relationships while in college, sometimes in way we NEVER saw coming, and Peter should be no different. In fact, I had several, one in particular which kinda reminds me of what it would be like to hook up with Felicity. If you'll allow me, here's the short version:

Coming out of a pretty big break-up (undergrad, girl I dated for 4 1/2 years cheated on me with a Hungarian juggler named "Chubba" during a European cruise (a story for another time)) I hooked up with a girl at a bar during Mardi Gras introduced to me by a friend who told me at the time "Be careful dude, she's crazy." Initially I thought he meant like "crazy in the sack" or something, but it turned out that she was actually bi-polar and on a manic episode (which I didn't find out about until later), and it was a pretty crazy ride for the month and a half that we were together. After that first night she offered to pay for a Spring Break trip to Padre the next week and my dumb ass went along for it during which I slipped and fell coming out of the shower and hit my chin resulting in stitches and it turned out that her credit was all f**ked up so I actually ended up paying for most of the trip.

After we got back she wanted a key to my apartment, freaked out when I wouldn't give it to her, went stalking about the campus looking for me and ended up in front the head of the CS dept. telling him that I did cocaine and beat her and ultimately presenting him with an Easter basket containing a headless chocolate rabbit and the cell phone she stole from me the night before. I had to report to the CS dept. head the next day (who was actually a pretty cool guy) who gave me the basket and told me (I'm SO not making this up): "Son, stopping thinking with your dick."

I'm leaving a lot out of the story here (like how she stole my check book and wrote checks to herself totaling a couple of thousands of dollars, etc.) but you get the point. Not saying that that's how they should portray Felicity, just saying that from a relatability standpoint, a lot of us have had relationships crazy (especially in college), so if they portray Felicity as something of a "she's wrong for me on SO many levels but I can't stay away" for Peter that could be a pretty interesting dynamic for those two that could ultimately span more than one movie.

Like, Felicity could be Peter's love/hate relationship until MJ graduates and returns in a later Spidey movie and then we'd have an actual... cat fight.

K, I'm done. My corny joke cannon is empty. I'm done.

bkmeijer1 - 12/9/2023, 4:06 AM
@StSteven - that jist went from a "wow" to a "that's wild". That's not just weird, that's crazy.

Glad mine are limited to being the same type of awkward like Miles in Into the Spider-Verse (so I guess I already did get my relatable superhero). But yeah, Peter's could definitely use more tension.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/9/2023, 9:53 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Oh, yeah. And I'm not making any of this up or exaggerating in any way. And if you think the above was crazy, things got even crazier after I broke up with her. Basically she came over, it was really later and I was trying to sleep and she wouldn't stop talking or whatever, so I went to sleep on the couch. That's when she completely flipped and went storming through my apartment grabbing stuff (like my cell phone) and stormed out. I was hiding under a blanket and totally thought that I was going to get a fork in my back. The next night she came back and shoed her way in through the door when I opened it and was like nothing had happened. I told her it was over and she just broke down. I ended up basically dragging her down the stairs (she was wrapped around my leg) and out of the building.

After that every night it was something else. She came back the next night and was down in the parking lot throwing shit from her car up at my apartment windows (her car was filled with stuff like clothes, shoes, silverware, mugs, etc.), but she scooted off before the cops showed up. After 2 or 3 more nights (the cops knew me on a first name basis by then) they caught her and due to her erratic behavior (and the fact that they found a steak knife beneath the driver's seat) they ended up having her committed. They could only hold her for 24 hours, however, so after they let her out she attempted to join the US Marine Corps and then showed up later that night and taped a plastic biohazard bag that she got from the hospital to the front of the apartment building which contained her Marines recruitment folder (which is how I know she tried to enlist) along with some manifesto she had written about me containing all kinds of crazy shit that I won't repeat here. Oh, and there was poop smeared on the door, although I'm not quite sure WHO'S poop.

After that she tried some other shit like showing up at my parents' house in the middle of the night (still not sure how she found their address) and covering the front of the house with Post-It notes containing a lot of the same stuff from her "manifesto" (I had A LOT of explaining to do after that), and eventually she went away. Her parents repaid me the money that she stole in exchange for me signing a doc stating that I would press charges. Oh, and did I mention that when she was roaming about the campus looking for me and eventually ended up in the CS Dept.Chair's office she was dressed as... a pirate wench?

There's more (seriously) but I think that that's enough for now. As that's all well in the past I feel sorry for her and hope she ultimately got the help she needed. I had a close friend who suffered from bi-polar for many years so I know how hard it can be.

All that said, again, I'm not suggesting that Peter deal with THAT kind of crazy girlfriend. BUT, any girl who takes the term "cat burglar" literally is bound to have some issues. And I think that so far Peter has had it pretty easy with his romantic pursuits (aside from his first girlfriend's dad being a sadistic criminal who tried to kill him). I mean, so far any girl that he's wanted to hook up he has been successful in doing so, so I think it's time to shake things up with a little crazy that he just doesn't know how to handle.

@StSteven - ''Oh, and there was poop smeared on the door, although I'm not quite sure WHO'S poop.''

Amber Heard's? Although she makes look Amber Heard look sane.

All that aside, I definitely agree with what you say in that last paragraph. Time to make Peter an actual nerd that doesn't know how to handles girls.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/10/2023, 3:53 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Well I don't recall pets being allowed in my apartment complex, so...

Anyhow, yeah both Liz and MJ were hot and Peter didn't really have to try to hook up with them, he just kind of hemmed and hawed his way into hooking up with them. And even then they were both pretty normal, low-maintenance girls without any real baggage (except for Big Daddy Birdman but that wasn't Liz's fault), so those were pretty easy going relationships for Peter without any real drama due to the girls themselves. Now it's time to crank things up. He's a big boy now, he can handle it (in theory), and if not then he's gonna have to learn the hard way like the rest of us. Time to bring on "The Real Girlfriends of Crazytown"! 😉

This girl gained 25 pounds between shows (according to reports). They had to cover her head to toe to hide it.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Don't know. I just like my comic book super heroes to look the part. Shes like a task master clone in the comics. They even made her a Phoenix (which was stupid) but the point being is she isnt just depicted as fit but as super fit and attractive. That aside, she just doesn't have a screen presence nor the acting chops to pull out the role. Obviously, her handicap inhibits her physical ability but thats on casting for so much box checking.
