The social embargo for Secret Invasion lifted a few hours ago, and that means we now have a much better idea of what to expect from Marvel Studios' latest Disney+ TV series.

As you'll see, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive so far, a relief to those of you who perhaps haven't been that excited about the show. The marketing campaign has only really picked up in recent weeks and with it clearly not an epic event like the comic book it shares a name with, there are those who have wondered, well, what's the point?

Thankfully, an incredible performance from Samuel L. Jackson, major twists and turns in the first two episodes, and the fact it's a true espionage thriller clearly means this a is series that does indeed have a point to make as a fine addition to the wider MCU.

The review embargo lifts later today, anyway, so check back here at 9am PT for our full Secret Invasion verdict.

Check out these first reactions, including our own, below.

In Secret Invasion, set in the present-day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

The show stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.

Secret Invasion arrives on Disney+ on June 21!

@bobevanz - i’ve worked movie screenings before and I can safely say that a majority of the people they interview for first reactions are just happy to be out of the house watching a free movie. I remember one time they asked what I thought about Birds of Prey and I said I wish they hadnt killed off black mask and I could see their eyes glaze over lol

@Thing94 - I know. The reason I even post this in a Secret Invasion article, is that every clip I have seen from this series looks absolutely awful.

Bunch of great actors just dry humping bad material, because what else are they going to do?
And I've learned to trust clips. If this, I mean the things posted in the article above, are meant to drive enthusiasm?

Like this is really the best you got?
This show looks awful.
Do better Marvel. I almost feel bad for Marvel fans, except for years they kept crowing about this and that superficial and non-sense things. So Now I don't feel very bad.

@TempleRod - every show/movie is gonna have a couple people who won't like it, it does make it "a real mess"...it happened with winter soldier and civil war. Sounds like you just want to hate for no reason
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 6:48 AM
@theprophet - If you spend the time to actually read the reasons why these people don't like it.
And you add in the clips we've seen so far.
I sense a smell of truth there. Their descriptions really add up based on those clips.

Sure if no one had ever seen anything, who knows? But we have seen things from this series.
And it doesn't look good. It looks like bad TV.

Unfortunately in this case.

A non superhero mcu flick. Yawn 🥱
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 5:09 AM
@Superhavs - I agree about the yawn. But I do feel the need to point out that There can be excellent superhero material that doesn't involve much superpowers at all.

For all the MCU lovers out there, best example is Winter Soldier. And the reason that movie succeeded the way it did, is because it was story and character driven. And written with a sharp tone that eschewed a lot of muddier modern writing.

If you look at the links I provide above, sounds like this one does not meet that level.
Marvel never any longer has any genuine story it wants to tell. It only has product placement for future episodes. Product placement to pretend to expand it's universe.
In the hands of someone like James Gunn, a superhero movie without powers. Now That's something I am excited to see.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 5:18 AM
@TempleRod - The way you’re shilling for James Gunn now is corny af
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 5:28 AM
@PlusUltra - Right shilling for Gunn, when the primary example I gave was a movie very much produced by Feige and the Marvel Creative Committee.

Back when Marvel movies had some shred of coherency. I am not saying I love Winter Soldier, but out of Marvel's total output, it's definitely one of the best.

Only thing I point out is that Gunn has that same capacity to turn focus back on basic storytelling. On Characters. Something the MCU seems to have forgotten about.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 5:48 AM
@TempleRod - Most of Phase 4 was character driven. You’re talking nonsense. Right now it’s DC releasing a movie driven by cameos, nostalgia bait and team-ups that’s shaping up to be their third fumble in a row. It’s just corny how Gunn had nothing to do with this article, but you forced yourself to interject him into the conversation in a poor attempt to create some kind of phoney sense of reassurance that the grass is gonna be greener on the other side now, when it’s looking real samey.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 5:51 AM
@PlusUltra - LOL.
Looks like I'm hitting some nerves on you, Little Buddy.

That's a pretty bizarre assessment of what I've said.
You claim Gunn has nothing to do with this article. But he's still the same one heading up movies that promise to deliver on hypotheticals like 'superhero movies without superpowers'.
Which If you'd even bother to check is what I was initially responding to.

Not a far leap, Buddy.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 5:57 AM
@TempleRod - You’re having meltdowns on every Flash article because people ain’t buying the shit they’re trying to sell. I’d worry more about your own nerves.

“Oh, the weather looks nice today, but in the hands of someone like James Gunn 🙌, there’s a real capacity for not only better weather, but the best weather we’ve ever seen”

That’s you bro 👆 shilling for daaaaayyyyysss
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 5:58 AM
@PlusUltra - It's hard for me to say the nature of your derangement.

Maybe the truth hurts is the closest I can guess.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 6:04 AM
@TempleRod - Maybe the truth lies in James 🙌 Gunn
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 6:13 AM
@PlusUltra - Now you are starting to make some sense.

PS I know you meant that sarcastically. But maybe if you keep saying a true thing, even disingenuously, maybe that thing will begin to rub off on you.

Keep it up, Buddy.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 6:24 AM
@TempleRod - It’s hilarious to me how you’re that ignorant to your own bs that you don’t even recognise how desperate it looks shilling for another Marvel guy (James Gunn) to fix DC.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 6:31 AM
@PlusUltra - Marvel Guy who was kicked out because of internal cave in to Twitter witch hunting.
And only came back for one movie, because he actually cared about those characters.
And that one movie is the single best thing out of Phase 4.

The reasons why he can 'fix DC', is the same reason he got kicked out of Marvel.
Because he isn't afraid to speak his mind, because he cares about characters and will put that forward first rather than 'Stupid Spectacle'. Even with big budgets.

I know it's a back and forth right now, because we don't have any output yet. But once you see this guy on Superman, I think even you will realize that it's a whole new level now.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 6:34 AM
A whole new level will actually benefit Marvel. Fans of Marvel material.
Because now they will have to adjust or just disappear.

Once new DC hits the stage, there won't be room for shit level shows like this one. You will either have to adapt and become better or become irrelevant.
Gunn is doing you guys a favor.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 6:44 AM
@TempleRod - He got sacked for making pedophilia jokes on Twitter. But I know you DC shills are cool with all that type of shit. And Vol. 3 was a Phase 5 movie. Keep up.

Right now everything is pointing to his Superman movie just being set up movie for the wider universe again. Because that’s what DC uses Superman for now. Not to tell Superman stories, just to set up the next character.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 6:53 AM
@TempleRod - DC just delivered two flops, is about to deliver another two, and possibly a third with Aquaman. All in a row. The IP is being beaten so aggressively while it’s down right now, you best mind people actually show up to Superman: Legacy. The world already tuned out of Transformers, and not even they had a string of flops like this.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 6:55 AM
@PlusUltra - Oh see. Now the truth comes out.
You are like @AmazingFilmPorg, you actually pretend that the man is a Pedophile.

Well Pedophile jokes, do not equal Pedophilia. They are distasteful, but they were always jokes,
and they were not crimes.
People change over time. Especially over 10 years worth of time.
Guess I never got the memo that Americans weren't allowed to speak freely. Last I heard we can still joke about whatever we want.

Plus I couldn't care less what "Phase" you guys are in.
LOL.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 6:56 AM
@PlusUltra - LOL.
You'll see, Even you are going to be slobbering all over Superman: Legacy.
It's going to be bare bones and return to form.
Just exactly what this tired genre needs.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 7:00 AM
@TempleRod - I ain’t American, and you can speak freely, but you’re not free of consequence. You wanna joke about pedophilia, then openly support a suspected pedophile, normal people are gonna start looking at you funny.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 7:06 AM
@PlusUltra - That sounds like a pretty harsh take on James Gunn.
I seriously doubt most rational people share this outlook with you.

If you go back and actually look at his posts, they are hardly even hardcore jokes.
Just counter culture nonsense. Basically a product of the times.
Which he has since articulated and even beyond that, apologized for.

But, hey.
You go knock yourself out, trooper.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 6/14/2023, 7:08 AM
@TempleRod - Like I said, when you make those kind of jokes, THEN openly support a suspected pedophile, people are going to start looking at you funny.
TempleRod
TempleRod - 6/14/2023, 7:14 AM
@PlusUltra - I would actually approach it from the other end.
Gunn, as a person who has been witch hunted, who has experienced being publicaly humiliated and defamed, who lost his position because of people overreacting and jumping to judgement.

He now is confronted with a genuinely troubled person. Who is being dragged into allegations that are not true (RE PEDOPHILIA) and dragged through the mud.

I see it perfectly clear that he would extend every effort to make sure that drama stays out of professional decisions. I for one appreciate that. I see a lot of people that cannot see it the same way, but I would urge them to go back and visit or maybe revisit the charges against Miller. He's not a pedophile, and people now, on this very site, daily, are accusing him of things that are pretty vile.
Pedophilia is serious stuff. You don't bandy those kind of accusations lightly.
That's all anyone asks.

@PlusUltra - Making a joke is not the same as supporting something. If you disagree please share a list of what you consider not to be OK to joke about.

This show has the potential to be the best MCU series. If they can pull this off with a more serious tone then that will bold well for the MCU going forward. After The Avengers most MCU movies kinda adopted some of the goofy Whedon humor in movies where they didn’t belong. Hopefully getting more serious stories that we got in Phase 1 will be part of Marvel’s course correct 🙏🏾
