SHE-HULK Writer Has Earned A Mere $396 In Residuals For Writing Episode Featuring Daredevil's MCU Return SHE-HULK Writer Has Earned A Mere $396 In Residuals For Writing Episode Featuring Daredevil's MCU Return

With writers and actors now on strike, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law scribe Cody Ziglar has hit back at recent comments from Disney CEO Bob Iger by earning his paltry residuals from the Marvel Studios series.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law proved to be surprisingly divisive among fans of the MCU, but Charlie Cox's return as Daredevil in "Ribbit and Rip It" received widespread praise.

Further establishing the actor's place as the Man Without Fear in this shared world, it was an action-packed effort which laid the groundwork for Daredevil: Born Again. As for who wrote the episode, that would be Futurama, Robot Chicken, and Marvel Comics scribe Cody Ziglar.

The WGA has been on strike since May and over 160,000 actors who are members of SAG-AFTRA joined them yesterday evening. Hollywood has come to a standstill and Disney CEO Bob Iger came under fire yesterday for saying he finds the entire situation "disturbing."

One of the WGA's demands has been for studios to reevaluate how writers are paid in the streaming era. In 2021, the average television writer in Hollywood made upwards of $10,000 in residuals for an episode of network primetime TV.

In comparison, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's Ziglar has earned a paltry $396 for his work on the Marvel Studios series.

The strike makes a whole lot more sense now, eh?

It's a shocking development and one which makes Iger's comments even more troubling, particularly when he's thought to be making upwards of $50 million per year. Now, Hollywood is likely to be at a standstill for the next several months.

Check out Ziglar's comments in full below.

They shoul sue that writer

That part I get.

But what about the other demands they are making? I read that the studios already agreed to up the pay to just under the writers' demands. But aren't they also asking to be paid for projects they didn't even work on? And also, trying to force studios to never use AI?

Those sound like two things that are unreasonable if I'm understanding their demands correctly.

@CorndogBurglar - I didn’t hear about that

The first one is crazy if true but the second is complicated

AI can be used imo as a tool for artists to create their art but shouldn’t end up replacing them.

@CorndogBurglar - The AI one is completely unreasonable on the studio's part. They want the ability to digitally scan and indefinitely use the likeness of background extras. You get paid $200 to come in, stand around for 12 hours, then go home and the studio owns your likeness and ability to do whatever they want with it till the end of time. Eff that.

@TheVisionary25 - Automation has displaced workers for generations. This is just a new form of automation. If you look at the current "writing" i dont doubt a machine could do as well or better.

@CorndogBurglar - Biggest problem I read was the working conditions besides pay. Apparently there is something called a small writers room that has no pay minimum, forces additional hours, and has no deadlines. This is mainly used for rewrites on projects but studios have been abusing it to get free labor and to keep talented writers from moving onto new projects. Another one is they want a set maximum number or hours they should be required to work. Apparently they were forcing writers to work 6 days a week and anywhere between 10 to 20 hr work days with the same pay.

AI thing makes sense to me because its a legal way to steal someone's work. They can just start stealing every writer's script, feeding it into a database, rewrite 10% of it, and take all the credit. Its the same with AI photos right now stealing other artists work then retooling it. Just look at Secret Invasion's opening credits its full of stolen concepts and art that a machine uses to retool into something thats a mix up of everything.

@CorndogBurglar - "But aren't they also asking to be paid for projects they didn't even work on?"

No, they aren't. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. You can read their actual proposals here: https://www.wgacontract2023.org/the-campaign/wga-negotiations-status-as-of-5-1-2023

@Reginator - And what are we gonna do when there are way more people than jobs out there because everything is automated and the only people that can “work” are the ones that were already wealthy and own all the robots?
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 7/14/2023, 10:46 AM
@Reginator - Also it is impossible for a machine to create art. It can create something pretty and it can create corporate product, but that’s not art. Art is human expression.
Reginator
Reginator - 7/14/2023, 11:49 AM
@BB8ANG - lack of creativity is whats been spit out of hollywood for some time now. reboots and sequels for the most part and if its not a rehash its poorly written garbage. Maybe its time for AI to spit out the garbage.
Reginator
Reginator - 7/14/2023, 11:50 AM
@CassianAndor - Biden admin said "learn to code" to those that lost jobs in the energy sector. Maybe thats the answer for these "talented" writers also?
BB8ANG
BB8ANG - 7/14/2023, 12:04 PM
@Reginator - You seriously think the hungry young writers out there are the ones wanting to make "Transformers vs. GI Joe 2: Revenge of the Terminators"? NO. That is the corporate side of Hollywood making those decisions. Everything you take issue with is BECAUSE these studios aren't valuing their creative teams.
BB8ANG
BB8ANG - 7/14/2023, 12:10 PM
@Reginator - Bad writing? Result of writers being rushed and underpaid to pump out scripts.
Bad VFX? Result of artists being rushed and underpaid to pump out effects.
Pointless sequels and reboots? Result of studios doing what they think will earn them the biggest profit.

Corporations cut costs to boost their profits. Its the same story time and time and time and time again.

CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 7/14/2023, 4:52 PM
@paperBoy - The quality of art may be subjective, but the definition is not. It’s the expression of human creativity. Emphasis on human.
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 7/14/2023, 5:03 PM
@paperBoy - I’ll amend my statement and say that the definition can also be subjective. But I think something almost everyone will agree on is that imagination and emotion are an inherent part of art. Something machines and AI are not currently able to have.

@mastakilla39 - "its a legal way to steal someone's work"

Humans do the exact same thing tho, ripping off each other's work all the time. If it's a true ripoff then they'll be rightly sued in court.
Reginator
Reginator - 7/14/2023, 8:27 PM
@CassianAndor - exactly it’s nonsense. Where was the SAG when these union blue collar workers were losing their jobs (who were paid much less than an actor) and they now expect support? F^%4K the SAG.
Reginator
Reginator - 7/14/2023, 8:29 PM

A She Hulk article (kinda)?.

Anyway , She Hulk might be my least favorite D+ show so far but I still found it decently enjoyable with the DD episode being the best of the lot imo.

Say whatever you want about the show but people should be able to make a decent living at the least , especially in the writing field in which job security can already be pretty shaky.

The days of execs leeching off of the talents of others to find success need to be over.

I absolutely stand with writers but that was a bad episode in a bad show and is therefor a very bad example for artists getting screwed over. I still can't believe actual professional screenwriters worked on She-Hulk. If I would deliver such a low effort performance like that, I'd just get fired and probably sued.

Blergh
Blergh - 7/14/2023, 8:52 AM
@Drace24 - quality doesn’t matter in this conversation, it’s about work delivered.

She did work, delivered, got paid and gets residuals.
That is all fair.
The residuals being so low is obviously shocking compared to what the lead actors will be getting for it.

The conversation being about actors standing with writers becomes a little more iffy once we see how much actors are getting
Drace24

@ShimmyShimmyYA - ...The people who paid money to see it?
Drace24
Drace24 - 7/14/2023, 2:56 PM
@Blergh - Yes, I get that it's a principle. And on that I agree. It's more about the journalism. When this story is supposed to make me feel bad for that writer then the quality of his work absolutely matters. The writing of She-Hulk was absolutely terrible. Noone bothered with basic principles of dialogue, comedy, character development or even consult a legal expert in this legal comedy. And I do not believe that writing this episode took longer then a week, in which case 400 bucks is about as much as I earn in my job, with exception that I would get fired if I would put in this litle care or worse.

Again, this is not supposed to be an argument against the strike. I absolutely support the strike. I'm just saying there are way better stories to that end then the woes of the hacks who made She-Hulk.
