Some very intriguing new details about What If...?'s upcoming second season have been revealed, including which character will serve as the main antagonist of Marvel Studios' retelling of "Marvel 1602."

The Watcher will make his long-awaited return in season 2 of Marvel Studios' What If...? when the animated series begins streaming on Disney+ on December 22. And in the spirit of the holiday season, we recently learned that we'll be invited to unwrap a new episode nightly for nine nights.

Thanks to Toonado.com, we today have new details about " What If... The Avengers Assembled in 1602?" According to scooper @CanWeGetToast, this alternate reality adventure will deliver "a mix of magic and steam punk," while "the villain of the episode will be Empress Hela with the 1602 Destroyer and her army of Yellow Jacket soldiers."

That has to be a reference to Ant-Man villain Yellowjacket, and we're intrigued to find out how What If...? will deliver a new take on an iconic comic book series (the last time the show did that was with Marvel Zombies, an episode which launched an upcoming spin-off series). 

With Hela taking centre stage here and in "What If... Hela found the Ten Rings?," we wouldn't be surprised if it's the same Variant who appears in both episodes. 

The Marvel 1602 comic book was written by Neil Gaiman with art by Andy Kubert, and reimagined iconic superheroes in the Elizabethan era. Set in 1602, the story unfolds in an alternate Marvel Universe where familiar characters such as Nick Fury, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man exist in a world of magic, intrigue, and political machinations.

The discovery of a mysterious anomaly threatens the fabric of reality, prompting Queen Elizabeth I to enlist these individuals with superhuman abilities to uncover the truth. The series cleverly blends historical elements with the superhero genre, and we're guessing this story will be used as a basis for What If...?'s interpretation.   

"Season two of 'What If...?' continues the journey as The Watcher guides viewers through the vast multiverse, introducing brand new and familiar faces throughout the MCU," reads a brief synopsis which was released alongside a trailer last month. "The series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles."

"Featuring fan-favorite characters this season like Nebula, Hela and Happy Hogan, episodes are directed by executive producer Bryan Andrews with executive producer AC Bradley as head writer."

While not confirmed, we have good reason to believe these are the titles of each episode and the order they'll be released:

• What If... Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes? (December 23)
• What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas? (December 24)
• What If... Iron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster? (December 25)
• What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper? (December 26)
• What If... The Avengers Assembled in 1602? (December 27)
• What If... Hela found the Ten Rings? (December 28) 
• What If... Kahhori Reshaped the World? (December 29)
• What If... Strange Supreme Intervened? (December 30)

I wonder if these What Ifs are doing Disney/the MCU any good. I know a lot of people who really love animated stuff like them but I don't know if they pay off in viewership.

I have read all the iterations of What If in the comics over the decades, but I just can't get into these on D+. I doubt the general public movie experience MCU lovers care about these.

@DocSpock - Dunno other than being more streaming content and dunno on cost/return for the platform. In reard to the MCU they aren't realy connected even if technicaly could be however may allow folk to accept and thus appreciate some stuff more thus aid interest and reception.

Thinking in terms of Cpt Carter and th alternate Cpt Marvel when Danvers BFF gained those abilities through the evil Dr Strange...

...all of that could have added interest and reception for MoM appearance of versions of those three variants and likewiise all helps prep for stuff like the Watcher and the ilk without anyone gettin bogged down into conectivity/canon stuff as won't count what if as full canon and worry about them or feel forced to watch them.

All What if's have been low on my interest list but as there and short and mostly standalone summut to put on when I have a small ga of time and don't wanna get to stuck into anything major and some were fun/decent but wasn't a biggie if meh either.

@DocSpock - the Disney+ What Ifs don't really feel like the What Ifs from the comics imo (actual What Ifs on established stories), so that's why I'm not the biggest fan of them.

I do like the animation, but there are so many different projects they could do in animation instead. Think a Matt Fraction Hawkeye animated show could be really cool.

@bkmeijer1 - As they chose for whatever reason to skip it, would love them doing a Ronin animated series set during the blip, I would be interested in that esp as can add in appearances of other street level characters like DD, the original White Tiger, Luke Cage, Kingpin etc.

@DocSpock - in general, or just the Marvel stuff? There is solid animation stuff out there, but I get it's not everybody. My preference goes out to other stuff too (Marvel or other)

I don't much care for animated stuff at all.

I particularly despise most Japanese big head giant eyes anime and manga.

the most animated stuff I watched were Saturday cartoons in the early-mid 60s.

I did watch the Disney classics with my kids, but that was decades ago.

@DocSpock - I'm not a fan of anime at all either. I watched a couple of episodes, but it's a style (both animation and writing) that's just not for me.

There's ofcourse stuff out there I enjoyed, like both Avatar shows. And if 3D animation counts, I'll add Arcane, Spider-Verse, Shrek/Puss in Boots 2 and The Clone Wars/Bad Batch too. Never watched the old American cartoons except the Disney classics though.

I had some dogs in the fight when the late 70s/80s invasion of Japanese manga & toys did tons of damage to many comic book stores.

It worked like this. People started asking for them from comic stores. Comic store owners said great, something else I can sell! They bought a ton of this stuff from the distributors & crammed it in everywhere in their stores. Then people started buying a lot of this stuff.

Sounds great right? WRONG!

It turns out adding a bunch of new stuff in the stores did NOT lead to more sales. Joe comic buyer who spent $150 a month in the comic store still had the same amount of money to spend. But now the comic store owner had 30% more junk in his store with a big early investment, but no return on it. but he could not say screw it & stop selling the japanese invasion stuff because his customers would just leave and go to a different comic store.

This led to severe damage to the industry & the closure of many comic stores. Most of them operate on a small profit margin anyway.

And I was very in middle of all this in one of the country's larger population centers. (Plus I didn't like their sh!tty anime either)

And you got an old man rant history lesson. Aren't you lucky?

@DocSpock - it's kind of the same with all content today, except it's time instead of money spent. I don't have more time to watch stuff, so I'll pass on more (and that often starts with animation).

I'm not really buying it. They already have Hela in one episode as a main character, so I doubt she'll get the spotlight twice. It could be the same variant, but that would defeat the purpose of What If imo

@OmegaBlack13 - and I'll be honest, I didn't really like the finale. The standalone stories, including the Strange and Ultron ones, worked better on their own imo.

The 1602 episode is the only one that sounds remotely interesting.

Making What If? have connected episodes and not just be a straight up anthology is such an annoying decision.
