Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that The Mandalorian and Grogu will blast into theaters in 2026 but what about The Mandalorian season 4? Asked about the show's future, Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni plays coy!

Last month, Lucasfilm shocked us all by revealing plans for The Mandalorian to make the leap from Disney+ to theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu. That was accompanied by a piece of concept art showing Din Djarin and The Child blasting into action, but the news left fans asking a great many questions.

For starters, will season 4 - which Jon Favreau finished writing before last year's Hollywood strikes - still hit the streaming service as originally planned? We've heard rumblings of a truncated fourth season but Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni was giving nothing away during a recent interview at the 51st Saturn Awards.

Asked about The Mandalorian season 4 (via SFFGazette.com), he coyly responded, "There's so much spinning in the galaxy right now. You know me better than to commit to any one thing... No mind trick works on me." Take that as you will!

A slightly more concrete update about the franchise's future has been shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger. Talking during an earnings call yesterday afternoon, he confirmed The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in theaters in 2026, "[leading] Lucasfilm's ongoing feature-development slate."

That now makes it official; this will be the first Star Wars movie to play in multiplexes since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker and, right now, there are two possible release options. Those are May 22, 2026 and December 18, 2026.

It's an undeniably long time to wait and pushes the Daisy Ridley-led "New Jedi Order" movie even further down the calendar. On the plus side, it could mean we get The Mandalorian season 4 next year.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," Favreau said when The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy added, "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen."

The movie's logo has also been released. You can check out that, and Filoni's comments, in the X posts below.

Few people know that Grogu is @McGee - nephew.

That is some wild family tree.

I hope this is a great movie. But I am not a fan of the title.

@TiberiousOmega - Seriously. This trend of just calling Star Wars movies and shows the names of the characters is the drizzling shits.

Grogu is just meme worthy.

Very Disney like to rely on a meme for a franchise to keep afloat

@vectorsigma - Disney/Marvel lves their "baby" versions of characters. Groot, Rocket, etc. They milk the sh*t out of them. Granted Grogu isn't Yoda, but let's face it, they're both essentially the same.

They need to change the title lmao. It's a mouthful.

@TheShellyMan - except for Solo: A Star Wars Story, every Star Wars movie had long titles (unless you count the original title for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope)

@bkmeijer1 - You mean 'Star Wars'?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/9/2024, 8:10 AM
@ObserverIO - yes, but ever since they introduced the "episode" thing titles already got too long

@bkmeijer1 - When you really think about it 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' is actually the shortest title ever, being even shorter than 'Solo - A Star Wars Story'. The numbers go like this (not counting the Clone Wars animated movie, which would be 5 words):

7
8
9

@ObserverIO - Christ, this makes me feel old. The first movie is called Star Wars. The second one is called The Empire Strikes Back. I won't watch the Extra Dinosaurs, Han Shot Second special edition bullshit, and I won't call the first movie "Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope."

I'm sure the movie will be fun and probably epic and worth the price of admission but can star wars jump ahead now? I'm so tired of the past.😐

There’s some disturbing shit in here. Makes that ABC interview all the more embarrassing. Chaudry isn’t even denying the accusations here.

Still think doing two Star Wars movies a year is a bit much, especially considering Marvel drops it's big movies in May and Avatar in December. Think Star Wars in July works better.

As for season 4, guess there's ample time for it to drop. Same with Ahsoka S2 and Heir to the Empire. Even if both movies replace the last two episodes of each season as finales.

Just please make sure that Pedro Pascal is back physically this time around.
Maybe it's just me, but I think the character loses a lot when he never shows his face.

@ClintThaHamster - Great for you. Mine was interested a few years ago, but has lost it similar to how I have. To each their own I guess.

We will see what the overall popularity is with how these new movies perform. Maybe they’ve gained enough new fans to replace the lost ones. Maybe they haven’t.

2026.
Wait isn't that the date that they originally said the next Star Wars film would release, back in 2019? And that some users would point out every time there was speculation or a tentative release date projected?

They (myself included) would say "It's gonna be 2026 like they said originally".
ObserverIO

WB did the same thing with Batman in 1997. They said that they wouldn't do another Batman movie for 8 year because of how bad Batman & Robin was and that they felt 8 years was enough distance to start again with a reboot. Over the next 5 years or so there were multiple Batman films in several stages of production with much earlier release schedules and then when it was all over, it turns out that they rebooted after 8 years just like they said they would at the beginning.

I guess it's an 'Are we nearly there yet?' kind of logic. The journey is gonna take a certain amount of time, but because of impatient kids in the backseat, you've gotta keep telling them that we're almost nearly there.
