Lucasfilm has officially announced plans for The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie which will finally bring the iconic Star Wars characters to theaters. Find more details on that, and Ahsoka season 2, here...

There have been rumblings online about Lucasfilm potentially bringing The Mandalorian to the big screen for months now, but as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, it's finally been confirmed.

Titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, Jon Favreau will step behind the camera to direct with the Iron Man helmer also set to produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni. The plan from here is for production to begin later this year, presumably with a 2025 release in mind.

What does this mean for The Mandalorian season 4? Well, it's previously been rumoured that Favreau's scripts for that next batch of episodes evolved into a movie after last year's WGA strikes, so we can't discount that possibility. Then again, as Mando is such a big draw on Disney+, season 4 could still follow somewhere down the line. Only time will tell.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," Favreau said in a statement earlier today. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added, "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen."

In the press release, it's mentioned that The Mandalorian & Grogu will "lead Lucasfilm's ongoing feature-development slate," essentially confirming it will arrive before the Star Wars movies announced during Star Wars Celebration last April.

Those projects from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Filoni are all still on the way, with the latter filmmaker currently developing Ahsoka season 2 for Disney+. We expected a second batch of episodes and those have likely pushed back his movie plans, particularly after Hollywood essentially came to a standstill for most of 2023.

Disney needs some guaranteed box office hits after a rough couple of years and The Mandalorian & Grogu is bound to succeed in that respect. Both characters are massively popular with hardcore and casual fans and we're intrigued to see what this means for them moving forward. Season 3 ended with Moff Gideon finally defeated and Mandalore restored, meaning whatever story Favreau tells can serve as something of a fresh start for the duo.

You can take a look at the first piece of concept art for The Mandalorian & Grogu - which sadly doesn't reveal too much about what to expect - below:

I like it. Season 3 was ass but Favreau cooks when he’s at the helm. Characters we want to see in a movie here too. Feels like a Star Wars movie that should be happening.

@GhostDog -
Season 3 wasn't great but I enjoyed it. Favs knows how to make a movie so I'm hopeful.

It's not "two new characters," it's two variations on long known characters. I don't know about everyone else, but I have no interest in this movie or any other Disney Star Wars movie.

That title is simply awful. They are both good characters (though Grogu is kind of just a cute doll Muppet... so maybe not really that intriguing).... but that title...'Grogu' sounds like a bad organic yogurt.

@rychlec - Yeah, I agree that that's not great. "Grogu" sounds like a space vegetable fertilizer. Like "Hey, StSteven, how DO you grow such large, juicy tomatoes?" "Well, Neighbor, I use Miracle Grogu. It's made from an age-old blend of one-eyed frogs, blue space cow milk, and Baby Yoda meat. It's all natural, and just look at the smiling faces on those tomatoes. Care for a slice?" "Um, what?"

How about:
"The Mandolorian: Rise of Gu"
"The Mandolorian: Gu Gu Dolls"
"The Mandolorian: 2 Fast 4 Gu"
"The Mandolorian: Dawn of the Town of the City of the Country of The Planet of Gu"

Or if all else fails, you can't go wrong with a classic:
"The Mandolorian: The Search for More Money"

Just spitballin' here.

@Cleander - Well see I was just making dumbass jokey suggestions but you actually have a realistic and good one. I would probably shorten that slightly to “The Mandolorian: Apprentice” just because otherwise it feels like there are too many “the”s. Good thinking though. Hopefully people wouldn’t associate that with “Celebrity Apprentice” because that could go south very quickly 😉.

@Cleander - Or to keep on brand for Disney "The Mandalorian's Apprentice".

Glad Favreau is at the wheel for the film. Iron Man was great and The Jungle Book is one of the actually good Disney live-action adaptations, not to mention his work on The Mandalorian.

@ModHaterSLADE - hopefully it's not another lion king.

But then again, really didn't seem like he was given as much freedom with the story. So I could see this work.

@Origame - Agreed. Think he's built up enough good will with his SW work that they'll let him have his way with this one.

In other words, they want to cover up the bad publicity from the news of the rey director.

@Origame - They should have had a movie that would have pacified the fans during the Sequel Trilogy at least now they are aware of the algorithm hate stream and they wont be caught unawares.

Just call it "Mandalorians".
EnergyVamp
EnergyVamp - 1/9/2024, 7:56 PM
The only interesting storyline was Mando with the darksaber and reviving Mandalore. Instead they backseat him and give him back Grogu to do the same BS again and again.

Many fans were expecting a King Arthur story but that got nixed...

At this point, I hope they do Thrawn justice and I hope we get more Anakin and CGI Luke Skywalker.

What's the point? Any story they tell can be told in season 4.
Timerider
Timerider - 1/10/2024, 4:04 AM
@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Disney needs cash, plain and simple. The Little Mermaid and The Marvels didn’t quite make the money they wanted, so they had to turn to the other cash cow they have and turn season 4 into a billion dollar movie hopefully. If this does well, we might get a Rebels movie or something like that.
Cleander

@Timerider - It's more than just cash they need a property that will bring positivity to their family brand.

This is what they need to do. Use characters and directors people actually like. Anyone who complains over this complains just to complain.

I guess after the great reception that Star Wars Episode 10:Rey got, they are making the announcement of The Mandalorion And Grogu movie.

Kinda too late tho when they already reunited Mando and Grogu. Grogu finishing training with Luke to have to go help Mando out of some dire situation could a been perfect. Now Grogu is some weird amalgamation who isnt a Jedi but is but isn't. Season 3 botched the show.
