Mark Hamill has responded to a Tweet from The Mandalorian director Peyton Reed, thanking him for the opportunity to return as Luke Skywalker when the character was "still a symbol of hope and optimism".

Much to the delight of (most) Star Wars fans, Mark Hamill returned for a cameo appearance in the recent season 2 finale of The Mandalorian as a de-aged Luke Skywalker, giving us the chance to see the the iconic Jedi in action at his peak as he saved Din Djarin, Grogu and their allies by taking down a legion of Darktroopers.

Last night, the episode's director Peyton Reed sent out a Tweet expressing how much it meant to him to be able to work with his childhood hero, and Hamill has now responded.

"I am so grateful to have been given the unexpected opportunity to revisit my character when he was still a symbol of hope & optimism," said the actor. "Your assured direction & kindness was a crucial element in the experience & means more to me than I can say."

A lovely sentiment, but some have taken it as a bit of a dig at The Last Jedi.

In Rian Johnson's divisive film, Skywalker was reintroduced as a bitter shadow of his former self, who chose to exile himself after his student, Ben Solo, turned to the dark side. While many praised this as a bold, interesting direction to take the character in, a lot of fans - and Hamill himself, evidently - felt it simply didn't reflect who Luke was and what he stood for.

What do you guys make of Hamill's Tweet? Drop us a comment down below.

@WakandanQueen - Deserved shade. The last 3 movies were a terrible disservice to Luke's character.

Probably my best moment of the year, as someone who actually liked his arc from the sequels it was definitely awesome to see Luke in his prime cutting down fools much like his father did in Rogue One

TLJ had some good ideas on paper, but holy shit does that movie grate me. If it didn't have the forced humor, pointless b-plots, and constantly overplay it's own hand, it really could have been the subversive gut-punch Rian Johnson clearly saw in his head.
Instead we got the cinematic equivalent of paint drying in reverse: just because it's not what you expect doesn't mean it's good.
Thank God for Mando. The Luke cameo I could take or leave but, if it makes Mark feel better than his sequel experience did, cool beans

The bit of The Mandalorion when Luke shows up was how I saw the progression of the character.

What they gave us in The Palpatine Trilogy wasn't Luke Skywalker.

@marvel72 - I think the progression is bound to looks different ~6 years after we last see him vs 30

The one silver lining...
Is that in Rian Johnson’s buffoon (and that is being kind) narrative decision May have saved many other of our favorite other nostalgic characters.

Luke had to die so others may live!
