Does Spider-Man exist in the world that Venom: Let There Be Carnage takes place in? Director Andy Serkis weighs in, while fans are convinced that the new trailer features a nod to the Avengers...

The Morbius trailer featured a couple of big nods to Spider-Man, including graffiti of the wall-crawler with the words "Murderer" scrawled across it. However, the biggest hint that the movie takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or a world very much like it) was the inclusion of Spider-Man: Homecoming villain Adrian Toomes played by Michael Keaton.

Our first look at Venom: Let There Be Carnage didn't feature anything quite that direct, though The Daily Bugle newspaper did appear to be based on the one from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies.

In an interview with IGN, director Andy Serkis weighed in on whether Spidey is part of Venom's world.

"Obviously, there are links between Venom and Spider-Man and the Marvel Universe and the Spider-Man story," he explained. "We're treating this very much as it's his own world. The Venom story is his own world."

"There are nods and little moments [like the shot of the newspaper the Daily Bugle], of course, but on the whole he's unaware. They are unaware, at this point, of other characters like Spider-Man. So, that's the way we've chosen to play this particular episode of the movie, but, well, we'll wait and see. We'll see what little things you can pick out of it."

We can't help but wonder whether Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius are supposed to be set in the same world as the Spider-Man trilogy based on what we've seen up until this point, but it's possible that Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to clear things up.

Talking of the Bugle, some fans are convinced today's trailer references Earth's Mightiest Heroes...

It's not connected at all. When the film says "In association with Marvel" it's strictly with Marvel Entertainment and not Marvel Studios.

@SonOfAGif

Morbius looks like it takes place in the MCU. From what we’ve seen.

@SonOfAGif - The assumption is this will ultimately also tie in with Morbius, which has suggested ties to the MCU (Keaton, and the Spidey art on the wall).

@SonOfAGif - Not taking a side one way or the other but that could just as easily be a byproduct of Sony's weird deal with them

@MosquitoFarmer - The spidey art was Tobey's spider-man tho

@Tonic24k - It was also reported from someone who leaked info about the plot from a test screening that in the actual movie it is Holland's Spidey. But who the hell knows.

@SonOfAGif - the picture in the article has a newspaper with "engers" and they want us to assume it's "avengers" when it's obviously "passengers"

@Makiveli21 - Exactly. From a legal standpoint and a respect standpoint Sony cannot and will not use any MCU film, character, or event as an Easteregg, reference, or focal point. There is a reason it excluded the Marvel Studios banner and instead went with "In association with Marvel" because it's part of their understanding that Marvel Studios is it's own entity within Marvel Entertainment. People seem to think Sony is filling in the MCU with smaller scaled stories when Kevin Feige stated plenty times that only Spiderman films with Marvel Studios producing will exist in the MCU.

With the Holland Spiderman, they're definitely gonna try and keep things open for if marvel will let some crossovers happen.

I'm getting bad vibes from this movie. I wanna be hyped but the trailer felt more unpleasant than fun

it's only a matter of time now before we get the crossover

@m1doriya - this was the perfect opportunity. What a waste.

We all know Sony well enough by this point to know that they could have every intention of trying to connect these movies with the MCU and having no idea how that is supposed to look or work.

Case in point, the layers of laziness involved in producing this shot:

@OmegaDaGrodd - they use Raimi's Daily Bugle logo too so maybe it was intentional

@m1doriya - Right, but only in the MCU would you assume that Spider-Man is being painted as a murderer at this point in time.

Of course, it could all just be them playing fast and loose with things without intending to tie them all directly *into* the MCU, because Marvel have already used JK Simmons to play a different version of JJJ, so that just might be the nature of the partnership between the 2 studios
