Ryan Reynolds Offers An Interesting X-FORCE Update; Talks About The Impending Disney/Fox Merger

With the Disney/Fox deal looming, many figured films like X-Force would never see the light of day, but Ryan Reynolds has offered an interesting update about the status of the script and when it may shoot.

Speaking with Collider, Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds shared a few interesting updates about the perpetually in-development X-Force film, which, while unconfirmed, has been strongly rumored to begin filming sometime in the last quarter of this year with Drew Goddard (Bad Times at the El Royale) at the helm.

While Goddard was hired to direct and pen the script last year, Reynolds revealed that there'sstill still work to be done before the script is finalized. “There’s a storyline that everyone’s happy with, but there isn’t a script yet. That’s yet to come.” There's a decent possibility that Reynolds may be playing a little coy here since there have been multiple reports pointing toward an October production start date, which would seemingly suggest that the script is further along than we're being led to believe, but it's still hard to know for certain until we hear something concrete from the studio.

It's been long expected that Goddard would start X-Force shortly after completing Bad Times at the El Royale, which is currently filming, and even though the status of the script remains uncertain, Reynolds remains extremely excited at getting an opportunity to work with Goddard, “I just wanna work with Drew. I mean, I love him and he has such an interesting take on where he wants to take that world. I see it being a real ensemble on a lot of levels just because I think it’s interesting for Deadpool to kinda function in the way he does in his own universe. You always get to sort of find some way to position him as the underdog or take everything away from him, but for him to function in an ensemble [in X-Force] is a lot of fun. I think there’s a real opportunity to not burden the narrative by shattering Wade’s life, so then at the beginning our movie you get to have him just be part of the team, which is obviously a very challenging prospect for someone like Wade Wilson. So, I’m really excited about that. I’m excited about a couple new characters that we’re talking about. And I’m really especially excited to work with Drew. He’s just amazing.”

On another note, while the upcoming Deadpool 2 will make fans want an X-Force movie more than ever, it remains to be seen what will become of the project if it doesn't go into production before Disney completes its acquisition of 20th Century Fox's film/tv assets, which is expected to happen by the end of summer 2019. For now, however, Reynolds notes that it's been more or less been business as usual at the studio, at least as far as he's concerned. “It really is at the moment—and maybe it’s an illusion, and maybe I’m naïve—but it’s business as usual at Fox. I also like to think, and again I don’t know anything, I’m not an executive over there, but I like to think that the acquisition of Fox, by whether be it Comcast, Disney, or Myspace for [frick]’s sakes, I like to think that whoever buys Fox is buying it to keep intact, and to allow it to be its own entity. I mean, it’s a valuable asset, it’s under a totally different set of rules and leadership. So, I don’t know, I would assume that it’s just gonna be business as usual, but [frick] if I know.”

To top things off, Reynolds offered a small detail about the film's potential rating and while most have presumed it will be R-rated like the first two Deadpool films, it doesn't seem like it necessarily has to be. “It’s all story first. I don’t think anybody’s thinking about the rating. I mean, my sort of wild guess would be that it would be an R-rated movie, but again, right now we’re just assembling the troops to figure out what story we would tell. And it’s a ways away from shooting still, and I don’t even have an idea as to the exact date. But yeah, we’ll see. Story first though.”

I share his sentiments.
I want to see X-Force by Drew.
I don't want to lose Fox as a Studios.
And the story is more important than a rating.

It's better be R-Rated tho. :3

X-Force should probably be R-rated, especially if Deadpool 2 is as gory and violent as people have been saying.

Someone on twitter wrote that it was the most violent film to be released since Kill Bill, Vol. 1 (2003).

@thunderforce - they will likely reboot the Xmen but Deadpool cant get any better than it is right now so why mess with it? Especially since it isnt really connected to anything outside its own universe for now.

@Ryguy88 - Well Deadpool lives in the X-Men universe and that universe will be one with the Marvel universe so he will have to pack his bags and move on over with them to the MCU . Not sure if they will make him PG13 or let him run amok in a little part of the MCU R but I guess we will see .

@thunderforce - maybe Deadpool lives in the future Disney/Xmen universe and we just dont know it yet. They could keep his universe somewhat seperate like they do with the Netflix series if need be.

@thunderforce - To me, yes X-men will get rebooted and shoved into the MCU, while Deadpool is on its own, I think Disney and Marvel are smart enough to know to not mess with that, reboot or change it to PG13. It wont affect him too much, a simple joke at the beginning of his next film....if there is a next one (Ryan, doesn't seem sure on the idea) to state something has changed. They could create their own characters that are spoofs on superheroes, wouldn't be a problem for the Deadpool franchise.

X-Force could be PG-13? Interesting. I don’t hate necessarily hate that idea. And yeah I think Fox will likely remain intact...except the Marvel properties are going back home.
