Thunderbolts* star Lewis Pullman has finally commented on his MCU role as The Sentry, sharing his thoughts on the franchise and whether he's a comic book fan. Find out what he had to say after the jump!

Marvel Studios originally enlisted The Walking Dead and Beef star Steven Yeun to play The Sentry in Thunderbolts*. However, after supposed scheduling conflicts led to the actor leaving the movie, Top Gun: Maverick's Lewis Pullman was quickly enlisted to replace him.

Talking to Josh Horowitz, Pullman refused to confirm whether he's joined the movie (he has) but praised the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"You know, I think the MCU is always something that I've watched and felt like is a beautiful world that is kind of untouchable," he started. "I think there is something about joining that world which is similar to joining television in that whenever somebody joins in, you want it to be as a character you can live in for a long time and an aspect of the world you want to be in."

Horowitz continued pushing Pullman for details, going so far as to show him a photo of the comic book Sentry. All he'd say about that was, "What a beautiful costume. Look at those locks, my God."

He then deflected and started talking about which superpower he'd want, suggesting being a shapeshifter would be the best possible pick. The interviewer jokingly took that as "confirmation" The Sentry will have that power, prompting Pullman to respond, "I haven't looked into Sentry. First time I've heard this name. The Sentry sounds like a snakey, shapeshifter kind of vibe, if you read the comics."

That has to be a nod to The Void, right?

Regardless, the Lessons in Chemistry star admitted that, regardless of his rumoured Thunderbolts* role, "I love graphic novels and comics. I think there's something so cool about that world because it's basically mythology."

You can check out the full interview below.

Confirmed cast members for Thunderbolts* include Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Florence Pugh as Yelena Boleva, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster.

Recently, Geraldine Viswanathan replaced Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role, while Lewis Pullman has taken over as The Sentry following Steve Yeun's shock departure from the movie. Both he and Edebiri are said to have left due to scheduling issues.

Written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, and directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is currently set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.

Hopefully he can do justice to one of my favorite characters

@mountainman - so I'd like to ask, because I know you're not a racist or bigot. You have strong opinions about things, but I don't believe they come from a hateful place. So I know I'll get genuine answer from your point of view.

What is it that makes you want things to be exactly like the source material? I say this as someone who doesn't mind race swapping as long as the essence of the character stays the same. I would of course rather the characters look and act like their on page counterparts, but I'm also open to changes in how they look, even if it is a bit of a shock to the system.

Because in my mind, throughout the history of film and television, characters are constantly swapped and changed from medium to medium, and not always to a detriment of the source material. So I think thats formed my opinion of not being so beholden to the source as long as it's respected. What would you say is your hard opinion as to why you really don't like the swaps to happen?

supermanrex - 5/16/2024, 11:27 AM
@mountainman - i dont give a shit if you want the character to look and be as close to source. its how shitty a lot of people act when that doesn't turn out to be the case and they go on a tirade crying over a woman being cast or a non white character filling a white source character. that's the ignorant bullshit i cant stand. am i disappointed there will be no norrin radd surfer in FF. of course. but im not on here ripping the movie to shreds with hate and throwing out Disney conspiracies about brown people and politics just cause surfer has boobs now or sentry was going to be Asian. throwing woke this and woke that around in every [frick]ing article about whatever they consider to be a miscast. just let us know once and go the [frick] away. spamming comments sections with your displeasure over casting because the demographic wasnt matching source material is annoying to see when i just want to come and chit chat fun shit with like minded fans.

@RedFury - It’s a visual medium. Even though this guy is white, I also have concerns what he will be able to put on enough muscle in order to look like Sentry. I also want Sentry to have long blonde hair.

That all being said, can changes happen that don’t negatively impact the end product? Yes!

The black Gordon in The Batman was fine.

I’d prefer my characters from source material to typically represent how they always have been just because that is who they are to me.

Or other times it just doesn’t make sense. For example, in some fantasy properties like The Witcher, Wheel of Time, Rings of Power, etc show small villages that are multicultural. That just doesn’t make sense. Especially if it’s an isolated village that likely wouldn’t have a lot of immigrants. Bigger cities would be as even in “older times” people traveled and mixed in big cities. But small isolated towns are typically mono cultural. If you are going to race swap do it to the whole village for example. So it just takes away from the immersion and you see the studio dictates that lead to it.

But that’s a different issue than is being discussed here. I’ll close out by saying that if Steven Yeun had stayed in the role and put on a killer performance, I would have ignored that he didn’t look like the traditional Sentry. But I would prefer the actor playing the character to look like the version we all know. A final example, I’d rather see a new character (like Miles Morales) vs race swapping an existing one (like making Peter Parker Brazilian).

@Matchesz - you cats always try to reverse shit on people. you know damn well what im on about. that gif is perfect for all you fools when a woman , black, asian or non straight individual is cast or pushed to the forefront of any project. white castings dont bother me, its how you shit bags act when white or male is not the focus anymore.
mountainman
mountainman - 5/16/2024, 11:37 AM
@supermanrex - Hey I agree that complaining isn’t good. I don’t personally endorse what other users say and I have my own opinions.

I prefer it to be as it has been. I’m all down for stories to be told about all types of people. I enjoyed Black Panther, Shogun, and the extremely diverse X-Men squad.

With the SS example, I’m not upset that Galactus’s herald is female. He’s had female heralds multiple times. And I get that this character has been the Earth X SS. But a majority of people want the classic and traditional one. If the movie is good will this one element ruin it for me? Nope. But it’s certainly a disappointment. And with Sentry, he is a muscular white dude with long blonde hair. I will also be disappointed if the version we get in this movie isn’t muscular with long blonde hair. So it isn’t just the race. It’s the fact that these characters have had a certain visual depiction for years and an adaptation should be obligated to adapt the source.

@Origame - Your username is of a paper folding art form whose culture you're not a part of. With your logic you shouldn't be able to use it.

Robert Reynolds(Sentry since you don't read comics) is blonde.

Lois Lane is a brunette.

She was played by a redhead(Amy Adams)

Cut the 'looks like the comics' crap.

Amy Adams on playing Lois: "This was a new idea, down to the hair color. I knew people would want to talk about my hair color. It was going to be a thing. (Director) Zack (Snyder) told me he didn't hire me to play someone else. He hired me to play Lois Lane. It's a whole reimagining."

If you didn't have a problem with Lois Lane reimagined, shut up about race. If you don't care about hair color, why skin if isn't not esential to the character?

Plenty of white actors played other races as characters hinging on their race, so hush!

@mountainman - i agree. i have visual expectations too. but i also know in the real world of entertainment a lot of shit from the comics doesn't translate well to the screen or to the mass audience beyond the comic book geeks. i understand that changes to physicality and costumes will take place. its sucks the life outta the anticipation for a movie or a show when its just constant people whining and bitching about conspiracies and trashing a movie before we even see the damn preview. by the time the trailer hits people who dont think for themselves are conditioned to go with the trending easy edgy hate vibe and dog-pile the project. there is really no more wait and see how it turns out ever anymore. that's why it so aggravating the second someone bitches about a perceived miscast or costume not being right , it turns into a dick measuring festival on who has the most edgy asinine comment and hot take about shit we have no clue about cause a lot of this erupts from just initial promo images. hell it even erupts over fan pictures that people are too lazy to read the context to see its not an official image or casting.

@SolarSoldier - 1) that's a false equivalence. There's a big difference between doing an activity from another culture and playing a character who doesn't fundamentally look like you. But then again, maybe you'd be OK with Ryan gosling as black panther then?

2) this point implies that I was ok with a red headed lois lane. I wasn't. But even then they could've just died her hair black. You can not die skin.

3) well list examples of white actors playing other races and I will tell you about how I have a problem with all of them.

@supermanrex - Totally get what you are saying and I don’t disagree with anything in your last response.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I personally am able to share my observations without it coloring my experience. I thought that the D&D movie looked dumb from the trailer and ended up enjoying it. I thought Ant Man Quantumania looked dumb from the trailer and hated it. I won’t ever say whether a movie or show is good or bad until I’ve seen it.
RedFury
RedFury - 5/16/2024, 12:22 PM
@mountainman - thanks for explaining your perspective on the matter, I appreciate the detail. I certainly don't disagree with anything you're saying. You're coming from a place which makes total sense. Why change things that are designed to be that way. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The topic of representation definitely throws a wrench in all of that. I do believe representation matters, so inputing different ethnicities into stories that are predominately one race is something that I think makes sense for a modern world, especially when it comes to something that's comic-book or fantasy based. But to your point, if it's done in a way that really screws with the story, or identity of the characters in the story it becomes something that just doesn't feel right and seems clunky. I think some of it can be written in where it does actually make sense within the story. But often times it seems to be put in without respecting the fact that the world they exist in should have some plausibility to it even if it has elves, or people who can fly. Their world should still feel "real" within the context of what it is.

A lot of the folks that scream at people like yourself for having this opinion seem to be reacting very emotionally, and trying to project something onto you without truly understanding your position. There are of course folks that are truly hateful and or racist, but I've always tried to approach these conversations without assuming the worst of people. So I hope the ones that have a knee jerk reaction to someone like yourself who just want to see true adaptions of the content you love, read what you wrote and chill out a bit. There isn't anything wrong with wanting what you love, to stay as close to it as possible. But it's good to hear you still have wiggle room as long as what it is actually turns out to be good.

Cheers man.

@RedFury - I welcome representation. My favorite show this year so far has been Shogun. I love seeing stories from different perspectives.

I just wish we got those characters highlighted rather than changing existing ones.

I get that this is a heated issue. I try not to be one of those haters, even though some people on this site may accuse me of it.
