It's taken more than two decades, but DC President Jim Lee has finally illustrated Wonder Woman in the same style as his iconic Batman and Superman covers, completing his Trinity triptych in the process...

21 years ago, Jim Lee illustrated a cover for Batman #608 which has since become nothing short of iconic. Depicting the brooding Caped Crusader watching over Gotham City, the legendary artist followed it two years later with his equally iconic Superman #204 cover.

Like Batman, the Man of Steel stood tall while keeping an eye on his home, Metropolis, and the two pieces of artwork complement each other perfectly. However, many fans have long argued that there's a missing piece: Wonder Woman.

The third member of the DC Universe's Trinity, Diana Prince is every bit as important to this comic book world as her fellow Justice League members.

Well, Lee's Trinity has finally been completed to celebrate the second printing of Tom King and Daniel Sampere's Wonder Woman #1. Set to hit stands on October 24, the DC President illustrated the piece alongside inker Scott Williams and colourist Alex Sinclair.

Perhaps most exciting is the fact this artwork will also be highlighted in a special foil triptych variant cover of the DC Trinity from the 'Jim Lee Icons' cover series.

The first issue of Wonder Woman was released last Tuesday. The solicitation text reads, "After a mysterious Amazonian is accused of mass murder, Congress passes the Amazon Safety Act, barring all Amazons from U.S. soil."

"To carry out their plans, the government starts a task force, the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.), to remove those who don’t comply, by any means necessary. Now, in her search for the truth behind the killing, Wonder Woman finds herself an outlaw in the world she once swore to protect!"

While we'd love to see Lee put his unique spin on more DC Comics icons, focusing on the Trinity feels like the right move. Still, adding original Justice League members The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter would be no bad thing.

In DC Studios' DCU, Superman will be played by David Corenswet, though we've yet to learn who will take on the role of Batman in The Brave and the Bold. As for Wonder Woman, we continue hearing conflicting reports about whether Gal Gadot will continue playing the Amazon warrior.

The Trinity symbolizes Hope (Superman), Love (Wonder Woman) and Justice (Batman).

@Bucnastydathird - I feel like he's been falling off steadily since the early 90s, but that's also around the time I stopped reading his books, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe it's me!

@ClintThaHamster - I don't know, I've been looking at Jim Lee's stuff since uncanny X men 91, so maybe it's just you.

@Bucnastydathird - Entirely possible! I came into X-Men when Marc Silvestri was ascendant, with Dan Greene and then Scott Williams on inks, so maybe I was more a Scott Williams fan than a Jim Lee fan. But this is my guy. Maybe I'm just more of a Jim Lee interiors guy vs a Jim Lee covers guy?

@ClintThaHamster - Scott Williams needs more recognition for his work.

@ClintThaHamster - he has fallen off a little bit lately but it’s because he is more involved in the business side of things and not just drawing constantly. His work is still really good though. So much of the current stuff from other artists is inspired by and even improving on his work now, so it doesn’t look as special as it used to.

@Himura - Of course. Just saying, new work from Jim Lee isn't as exciting as it was 30 years ago. (Christ I'm old.)

DC has 3 of the greatest superheroes ever invented, yet somehow managed to completely neglect 2 of them.

Little did I know that I would be completely disappointed by this shipwreck universe let alone that one movie

@JFerguson - seriously, how ridiculous batman’s chest looks there

Maybe snyder mistook a rob liefeld drawing for Miller’s

@dracula - haha it’s pure frank miller brawler Batman but I know what you mean. I wasn’t a fan of the neckless approach to the cowl and the ridiculous padding

The altered voice was also overkill

@JFerguson - This was by far the most hyped I was for a movie up to that point. It was the event that would end all events...until it came out, and ended up ending DC's film future.

All 3 of them together:

Cool idea but it doesn't really fit with the other two. His style has slightly changed. It doesn't have the same heavy block shadows and the linework is more detailed now.
Also, Supes and Bats are in their classic costumes, while Wonder Woman is wearing her 2023 costume. He should have drew her the way he did back in 04 to make them feel more connected.

She really is the light of Superman and the darkness of Batman all blended together.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 9/25/2023, 4:19 PM
@ObserverIO - I guess? Some portrayals definitely hit that but I find her somewhat inconsistently portrayed across media between being a rather cold and ruthless warrior and an ambassador for peace so much so that some versions of her seem downright hypocritical (which either makes for a poor portrayal or actually a more nuanced and interesting character when she's forced to face herself).
Slotherin

Cool that he got around to it but it also makes sense why it didn't happen sooner. Batman and Superman are direct foils to one another and also mirror eachother a bit more, so the Superman one was a direct response to the Batman one and a pairing with it.

Both have a specific city they protect and I could be wrong here but Wonder Woman doesn't have that nor is she as iconic. Also the characterization is more consistent for them.
Superman is a god-level bruiser who pulls his punches because of his ideals and protects his adopted city of Metropolis. Batman is a street level detective who combats crime in Gotham with his wealth, wits, and gadgets.

Is Wonder Woman a brutal warrior or an ambassador for peace? Is she a virtuous feminist or a jaded misandrist? Writers often can't seem to decide. Where does she operate? She's from Themascyra, but where does she have a stake in "Man's world"? Even her origins get mixed up with each adaptation.

With my critique out the way, I do like how hers fits between the other two (giggity) and that's pretty cool. Definitely would make a cool poster to have all 3 like that.
