A live-action Saga television series or film is high on the Christmas wish list of The Boys and Supernatural showrunner Eric Kripke.

As part of The Hollywood Reporter's profile of the 50 most powerful showrunners in Hollywood, the trade spoke with The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, who revealed that tackling Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples' Saga comic is his dream project.

"Saga, by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. I’m obsessed with it. So insane and so grounded at the same time. Brian and Fiona, call me!", said Kripke to THR.

He then took to X (formerly known as Twitter), to double down on his statement, implying that he mostly agreed to do the profile to let BKV and Staples know that he's serious about adapting Saga

First released in 2012, Saga was instantly one of the most critically-acclaimed and best-selling comic book titles. Described as Star Wars meets Game of Thrones, the comic book follows Hazel, the daughter of two people from opposing alien races.

The story is creatively told in the form of Hazel peering into the past, describing how her parents, Alana and Marko, met, fell in love, and reared her amid a bitterly fought and often gruesome conflict between two drastically different cosmic empires.

The series went on a lengthy hiatus from July 2018 to January 2022 to allow BKV and Staples time to recuperate from burnout and plan out the remaining arcs of the story. Today, the series is still very popular but hasn't quite reached the same heights as its initial run, with some fans stating that the lengthy hiatus and slow burning plot progression since the series' return has led to them losing interest.

To date, 66 issues of the series have been released and compiled into 11 tpb volumes.

Kripke's interest in Saga goes back to his Supernatural days, where he would sometimes have the cast wear Saga t-shirts or slip in references to the ongoing series.

While initially against Saga being turned into a TV show or movie, BKV eventually changed his mind, stating in 2017, "Maybe when the story is finished? I think Fiona and I are both open to Saga possibly being translated into another medium someday, and we’ve gotten a lot of very flattering offers, but for the moment, we’re just concentrating on trying to make the greatest comic book we can."

The monthly title reportedly crossed the halfway point with issue 54 and will be releasing issue 67 later this month. If there is not another lengthy hiatus, the comic should wrap up in another 4 or 5 years.

Please, don't.

The concepts tackled in Saga are like the exact opposite of The Boys and approached from an entirely antidiametric point of view. Of all the creators (and fandoms) suitable for a Saga adaptation, Homeladner's and Butcher's bootlickers are definitely not the kind best suited for the task.

Then again, I also believed that One Piece was impossible to adapt in live-action, so what do I know?

@DrReedRichards - I feel exactly the same. I've been surprised by creators befire, so at this point I'll just wait for the final project before I'll get my panties in a twist.

@DrReedRichards - crazy to think that the same creative team f*cked up Cowboy Beebop but made One Piece work.

@marvel72 -

I think Oda's role as an advisor was pivotal. It really is no coincidence that he gave the team all the freedom they needed so long as they stayed true to the source material's tone, whereas Watanabe started as a producer for Netflix's Bebop but didn't stay for long.

Sorry I'm a noob, but what is Saga and what is it about.

@lazlodaytona - it’s about a planet and a moon at war with one another, but despite that a man and a woman from each fell in love and had a baby.

It sounds simple and lovey dovey. It is absolutely *not* that. It’s a brutal examination of war and prejudice, and is astounding in its rawness and truthfulness of the characters. They feel real despite the heightened fantasy of their world.

Truly excellent storytelling. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and some panels will stick with me forever, for grotesque, sexy and beautiful scenes and art.

That would be so cool to see a live action Saga. I loved the art style on that book too.

Should definitely be a premium cable show with GOT money and input.
I don’t think Kripke is the creative to tackle it though.

Dan Stevens is Marko.

@Repian - Marko is meant to be Asian lol - and drawn that way too, according to Fiona Staples. His mom and dad are also very Asian.

So Dan Stevens is definitely *not* Marko haha

I like Steven Yeun for Mario
And either Tessa Thompson or Zendaya for Alana

I love Saga but if I remember Vaughan and Staples deliberately tried to make something that was too expensive for television and too mature to make a faithful successful movie of.

Obviously things have changed since they sratred with more cinematic shows and streamers being far bigger but still.

This would be great as an Apple TV show

At this point I almost start to think "X (formerly known as Twitter)" is the full name of the platform. Not X, not Twitter, but just the full line.

That said, I didn't know about Saga. Sounds pretty interesting, so maybe I'll give it a shot.

Gives off some strong "the artist formerly known as Prince" vibes.

Honestly it should not be live action. Would be better suited for animation, especially since the comic’s beautifully rendered art style would translate better in animation.

No. Saga can't be be adapted to live action without seriously cutting it up. And what's the point if you do that?

This sounds very interesting.

But Hollywood would ensure they DEI it to death and ruin it, so what's the point?

As much as I’d like to see an adaptation, I think the creators have been pretty adamant about not being interested. Which could be for the best, as I’m not so sure Kripke is the guy to do it.

It’s a shame how much the momentum died with Saga, because that first half really was some of the best comics I’d ever read. Here’s hoping this current hiatus isn’t as long and they manage to stick the landing.
