Newly surfaced Eternals concept art has revealed the wildly different designs Marvel Studios considered for Patton Oswalt's Pip the Troll in the 2021 movie, but are they better than what we ultimately got?

Eternals added a lot of new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Harry Styles' Eros and his unlikely ally, Pip the Troll. Fans were intrigued by both characters and what they'll potentially bring to this franchise and the wider MCU moving forward.

Teleported aboard the Domo by Pip, Starfox (Thanos' brother) promised the rest of the Eternals that he could help them find their missing friends. It was an intriguing moment, albeit one somewhat overshadowed by the questionable VFX used to bring Patton Oswalt's Pip to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There have been a lot of criticisms online about Pip's appearance, with comparisons made to the CG characters in The Polar Express. That's a little harsh, but we'd later learn the teleporting Laxidazian was a last-minute addition to the 2021 movie's mid-credits scene.

Some newly surfaced concept art from Eternals has today found its way online and it showcases several drastically different designs for the character. Pip has been portrayed in all manner of ways by different Marvel Comics artists over the years, giving the MCU's concept artists a great deal of freedom.

Ultimately, the version we saw on screen was largely comic-accurate and brought to life by actor Patton Oswalt (who has said on a few occasions he's still waiting to hear about a possible MCU return).

In the comic books, Pip is commonly associated with Adam Warlock, but it looks like the MCU is taking things in a different direction by aligning him with Starfox instead.

His teleportation powers could prove key in finding Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos after they were abducted by Arishem the Celestial, though that's a story we probably won't see play out until Eternals 2 is released.

Their cgi looks just as bad as the concept art lmak good grief. Also watching Jurassic Park with a full crowd yesterday was amazing!

This was one of the early instances of CG artists doing the bare minimum on a high profile, big budget release. We should've known something was up.
It just got progressively worse, even in successful movies like NWH, but we could blame that on Covid.

I'm starting to think that, now VFX workers are unionizing, the first thing they'll do is strike.
Imagine that.
The writers and actors come off strike, start making movies, studios set release dates and then just as these movies are entering post... BAM; VFX goes on strike.

@ObserverIO - I hope they strike. These are last minute addition and give no time to render things properly. Is they point out this issue, Marvel simply says their fans don't care about quality. This has been brought to their attention not once but multiple times like in BP, love and thunder, this etc.

It's always same response from them they don't care, their audience will eat it up. It's basically falls on VFX studio and employees to do overtime to save their face.

The company that is loudest to virtue signal turns out to be the greediest and cruelest to their own employees. Imagine that.

Also they could've just shrunk Oswald via cgi and called it a day or *gasp* hired a little person; wait, that's prejudiced or is it woke? I can't ever tell the difference

Really could’ve gave Paton pointy ears and pip suit. Would’ve been less muscular and a little heavier but would’ve most likely been better than their below average cgi pip.

The second one would have been better

And he was never seen or heard from again.
