Netflix has announced that Black Mirror will return in 2025. The seventh season of the sci-fi anthology series will consist of six new episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the Season 4 classic, "USS Callister."

For those in need of a refresher, "USS Callister" starred Jesse Plemons as Robert Daly, a brilliant but troubled programmer who co-founded a popular massively multiplayer online game. Bitter over the lack of recognition from his coworkers, he creates a Star Trek-esque simulation within the game. Acting as captain of the USS Callister starship, Daly orders around his crew of sentient digital clones which have been created using the DNA of his co-workers.

As Netfilx spoiled in the announcement of Black Mirror Season 7, things don't quite work out for Daly by the end of the episode.

"Captain Robert Daly may have died in the original episode, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning…" the streamer teased.

Netflix released a brief teaser for the upcoming seventh season which featured some references to USS Callister but didn't reveal much else.

The six episodes will be the most released in a season since Season 4 back in 2017. Following that season, Netflix released Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, an interactive film where viewers make decisions for the main character.

Following Bandersnatch, Netflix released a three-episode season 5 which featured guest stars Anthony Mackie in "Striking Vipers" and Miley Cyrus in "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too".

The series then went on hiatus for three years before returning for its sixth season in 2023. Season six also featured a number of high-profile actors, including Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, and Zazie Beetz.

Season 6 was rated 78% on Rotten Tomatoes which is below the earlier seasons, but also higher than both Bandersnatch (74%) and Season 5 (66%). Despite the generally favorable reviews from critics, both seasons appeared to be a miss with general audiences with Season 2 rated 52% and Season 6 rated 43%.

"With a yield of installments that range from instant classic to woefully undercooked, Black Mirror's sixth volume indicates a series that's no longer on the bleeding edge of sci-fi but hardly resting on its lofty laurels," the critics' consensus reads for Season 6.

Perhaps a return to the USS Callister will help right the ship.

@EgoEgor @MattIsForReal @DrReedRichards - that episode with Wyatt Russell was pretty good too imo

@bkmeijer1 -

Acting wise it was greatly executed, but I personally didn't find the ending as impactful. White Christmas on the other hand had me jump up and audibly vocalise my shock. Like, no joke, I still remember how that twist hit me.

@DrReedRichards - Wyatt definitely carried that episode, even though the twist was kinda predictable.

I'll admit I never saw White Christmas, so I might give it a go soon. So I'm gonna stay away from this thread now before I get spoiled.

Do yourself a favour and watch it ASAP. If I were to pick one BM episode out of the entire series as its very best, that'd be it.

@EgoEgor - Me too. It always felt like a bad dream I had.

@DrReedRichards - just looked it up, and it is part of the UK seasons. I watched all of those, but I somehow don't remember that one at all. I might as well give it a rewatch

@bkmeijer1 -

To be fair, that was easy to miss. Yest, it was still part of the show's UK era, but it was aired after season 2 was technically over and before the rights were acquired by Netflix. So technically speaking it's place right at the end of the end of S2 and right before the start of S3 without being past of either.

But I digress. GET TO IT!

@DrReedRichards - maybe I missed it first time around on Netflix, but it's on there now. I will doc

@DrReedRichards - Jon Hamm was good in White Christmas, as well as in selling that final twist.

Jon Hamm has incredible range. Underappreciated comedic talent too. He was one of my picks for classic 616 Reed.

Happy to see love for the show, but I wasn't a fan of this particular episode. My top picks remain The Entire History Of You, White Bear, White Christmas, and San Junipero.

I couldn’t get into the last season of BM. For me the show peaked with the previous season which included striking vipers.
BM is by far one of the best shows that Netflix has ever produced period. Innovative storytelling at its finest. Each episode and season brought nuance and ingenuity and USS callister was one of the most prolific episodes. Looking forward to the continuation.

Black Mirror is the only show that returns like a deadbeat dad, yet is adored by the family.

Extremely overrated episode.

Only seasons 1-3 of Black Mirror are worth watching (and "Hang the DJ" from season 4)

Why are people shitting on Black Mirror????
It's a modern day version of Twilight Zone! What could bother people so much that they don't like it?!?!?
TrentCrimm

@KindredMac -

I think because people want to like every episode, and with something like Black Mirror covering so many different topics, genres, and styles, there's going to be a lot of people who dislike the show for it.
KindredMac
KindredMac - 3/28/2024, 4:49 PM
@TrentCrimm - I hear ya on that. There were plenty of episodes I hate of a series but that doesn't mean I shit on the entire show series.
I absolutely HATE some episodes of Clone Wars, but would die on the hill defending the entire series.
Not all Twilight Zone episodes were great, there were some real snoozers... but still a great series!

Might watch it as a double feature then, since I never got around to the later seasons. Seems like a good enough reason to get back into it (or atleast, this episode)

It's always interesting to see how a writer on this network of sites changes their article from one part of the network to the next. This article's writer, Matt Is For Real, or @MattIsForReal, first published this story on sffgazette.com. Matt then publishes the story on CBM, but changes a few details in the article. I've noticed that from time to time, when an article appears on comic book movie, but may have references into other genres, like horror, wrestling, action, western animation, anime, science fiction, or some other genres that Best Little Site covers.

Star Trek seems to have as many direct parodies as Superman. Some of them are actually OK, but just for the sake of originality, it gets a little tiring seeing "another" parody or satire or send-up of Star Trek and Superman.

And yes "White Bear" and "San Junipero" and "Shut Up And Dance" and "White Christmas" are (very) good.
