Marvel Studios is believed to be in the early stages of development on a fifth Thor movie, and while Thor: Ragnarök and Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has already taken himself out of the running, a recent rumor claimed that Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Creator) was being eyed to helm the project.

Edwards was asked about the rumor during an interview with Post Cred Pod, and while it sounds like the filmmaker was surprised to see his name mentioned in connection with the film, he admits that he might be interested... under the right circumstances.

"I saw those rumors, too. I saw it and I jokingly sent it to my girlfriend. I just texted her the link and said, ‘I didn’t want you to find out this way.' I’ve never heard anything about it. It’s totally… the internet is an incredible place. I love those movies. I love Marvel, a lot of my friends work on Marvel films. I love all the other movies and franchises, I go to see them. I have most of them on my DVD/Blu-ray shelf. But I really want to keep pursuing original sci-fi. Was that a very politically correct answer? I never say never. In the right circumstances, absolutely."

Of course, just because Edwards hasn't been approached to direct Thor 5, doesn't mean he isn't on Marvel's radar. It's also possible that he has had a conversation about potentially boarding the franchise and simply doesn't want to give anything away.

Whoever ends up helming the movie - assuming it even becomes a reality - we can probably expect a slightly darker, more serious tone than Love and Thunder, which was widely criticized for taking Ragnarök's light-hearted elements to overly silly levels.

If Chris Hemsworth does take up Mjölnir again, it might well be for the final time, if comments from a recent interview are any indication.

"I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean?" the actor said of potentially returning for a fifth outing. "I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know...am I at that stage? Who knows?"

Would you like to see Edwards direct Thor 5? Be sure to let us know in the comments section.

"Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced -- a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who -- to his surprise -- inexplicably wields his magical hammer. Together, they set out on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance."

Unless the entirety of Phase 5/6 is altered, we won't get a Thor 5. It makes no narrative sense for a 5th Thor film to occur in Phase 5 or 6 given the layout of the upcoming films.

@Scarilian - neither does Echo, or Agatha or Iron heart or Thunderbolts... yet here we are so who knows what will happen

@Scarilian - it kinda does. this phase has no big baddie yet so it doesnt matter when it comes out as its a solo adventure. hell give us spiderman 4 or shang chi 2 before avengers 5/6. if anything they should delay avengers until 2030 so all the new characters and shows have a sequel.

@mastakilla39 - the only sequels we should get are those that people are chomping at the bit for. So Spider-Man 4.

@ObserverIO - I disagree the new characters need sequels because that will force marvel to stop relying on the og actors as cameos and references. We don't need another Star Wars situation where they relied too hard on the OG actors and past storylines. If anything the OG actors should all just be cameos and they should give us another 2 - 3 years on only the new characters like Shang chi, thunderbolts, Sam (cap), Blade, new black panther, F4, etc.

IMO they should delay Avengers for another 10 years to build a new lineup and Spiderman should have is own solo stories and adventures away from the MCU.

@mastakilla39 - Maybe they should delay the big multiversal renewal (Kang Dynasty/Secret Wars), but I think they should have some Avengers movies, but with the legacy characters. We should have already had an Avengers movie at the end of Phase 4 with Shang-Chi, the new Black Widow, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the new Captain America, Captain Marvel, maybe Photon, the new Black Panther and maybe Rescue.

We should also have had a Young Avengers movie.

I think this would have solved the lack of connectivity problem people have been happening. We'd care more about the characters if they were all officially Avengers.

I don't think people will still be watching if they did that. I know a lot of people have checked out already.

@Scarilian - they will because each "Avengers" film is an event similar to Star Wars, James Bond, or Avatar. people are just skipping the non avenger films because there's too many to keep track of. its easier for most to just skip all the solo films and just have the next avengers recap what we need to know.

It's not possible for the next Avengers film to recap everything people would need to know. We currently have a roster of around 80 main characters and over 50+ hours of content you'd need to summarize. You can't even rely on callbacks because most people won't know what they are callbacks to.

mastakilla39 - 12/21/2023, 11:15 PM
@Scarilian - You won't need to recap "everything" only what people need to know. Similar to how in AoU Thor told them the avengers about the infinity stones then in Infinity War Hulk told'em about Thanos and the infinity stones again. Short exposition in less than 5 minutes. You only need the details that matter to the story not a recap of every movie and tv show people missed. People aren't going to know who Moon Knight, Daredevil, or Shang Chi is but it won't matter similar to how they didn't need to see Black Panther or any solo Spiderman films before Infinity War.

Sadly nobody knows any of these characters and a recap of 'I walked through a wall made by a witch' or 'I got bangles in the mail' similar to The Marvels won't cut it because it diminishes your characters into making them look like a joke. Given we have so many characters we don't have time to introduce them all and establish them while juggling everything else.

Avengers 5 is the main one that will suffer from people not being connected to any of the characters. You need to actively care that they are going to lose and I don't think many people are, heck, most people will be happy when the incursion wipes out all these characters they don't know and then teases a multiversal Avengers team set-up by Loki that includes Tobey Maguire, Hugh Jackman, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, etc...

Avengers 6 is pretty much just all in on the nostalgia and cameos so you can just do a handpicked multiverse comprised of Spider-man, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Captain America variant, Iron Man Variant, etc... Avengers 6 ending with another Endgame portal scene of weird/wacky multiverse characters that you don't need to really know every one because the appeal is seeing them all together and fighting.

"it won't matter similar to how they didn't need to see Black Panther or any solo Spiderman films before Infinity War."

Black Panther a majority of people had seen him in either Civil War or Black Panther which served as an introduction. Spider-man meanwhile is one of the easiest characters to understand and has a decade of films.

I can see people understanding Daredevil, he's blind, he's a lawyer and he showed up in Spider-man: NWH and had a popular Netflix series (and is about to be ruined in a Disney+ series that will at least promote conversation on the character). In a similar regard a lot of the new characters are just effectively sex swapped versions of prior characters so you can introduce them as the protegee's of the prior characters or they'll fit with the idea people know such as Female version of Hulk, Female Hawkeye, Female Thor, Younger Black Widow, Female Iron man, Female Loki, etc...

The trouble is characters like Moon Knight, Man Thing, Werewolf By Night, Eternals, Shang Chi, etc... there's no way to really explain or develop all those characters so I wouldn't be surprised if their role is a cameo in Secret Wars in a similar way to how Lizard was handled in NWH were he's just a weird/wacky monster. If they have larger roles it will matter because people won't have any understanding of who they are so it'll feel forced if they do anything major. You also have to actively build-up and hype Kang all from scratch OR an entirely new villain.

@DrReedRichards - Wow, sounds like another boring cluster[frick] of characters and ideas without a proper execution.

So, in short, like any Thor movie made after 2011.

Did you seriously expect an entire script's execution from a single comment, or are you just trolling again because you need the MCU to die for no particular reason?
URCOMMENTSUCKS
URCOMMENTSUCKS - 12/14/2023, 8:43 PM
@DrReedRichards - I didn't criticize the lack of detail in your premise. I criticized your premise. You're suggesting to introduce two major new characters that this franchise never earned to have this late in the game, continue the awful B-plot left from Dumb and Thunder, and have Thor fight a Z-list villain from Dan Jurgen's run.

They couldn't make a compelling story out of The God Butcher, you expect them to do something good with the Apocalypse rip-off? To me, it's repeating the mistakes of the previous movies.

I said many times and I'll say it again: if this new Thor movie indeed has to happen, it should be stripped down of all the bullshit, be as basic of a story as it can be, and focus on Thor and Sif falling in love. Maybe have some conflict with Sif, who criticizes Thor for not being anymore the man he once was. That way there is in-universe reason for Thor to change back to his serious self and leave the dimwitted clown amplua behind.

DrReedRichards - 12/15/2023, 6:05 AM
@URCOMMENTSUCKS -

Sooooo, you're bringing up Thor's introduction from 2011 as a positive example, a movie that by definition introduced several new characters, but somehow that premise can't be done today?

I mean, there's trolling, and then there's desperate, baseless, contrarian trolling like that
...

But hey, trolling is trolling, so kudos for consistency, I suppose.

@DrReedRichards - Mother[frick]er, if you want to start an argument with me over me laughing at your bad pitch meeting skills, then do so without making a fool out of yourself.

Nothing I said is contradictory. Thor 1 introduced characters that were established as part of Thor's world from the get-go. You're suggesting to have yet another never-seen-or-heard-of sibling of Thor, who was god knows where this whole time, and another character who should take up his mantle to appear out of thin air. The Warriors Three and Sif were part of Thor's story from the beginning and we see them being comrades (something those lazy [frick]s by the name of Waititi and Hemsworth forgot about).

There is no trolling. You just suck at stories.

Please, please call it blunder, love and blunder. Blunder was the beginning of the end of the mcu, cause it was so bad and it was allowed, dogshit bad. Recast Hercules, ignore blunder all together and have a movie with mangog as the big bad. He attacks, clobers the avengers without thor and they find him, he gets his balls back and then he saves the day. If you intro the xmen or f4, automatically a 2-4 billion hit.

I would have waited for the soft reboot after Secret Wars to make another Thor movie, possibly with a different actor attached. But Marvel likes to live dangerously I guess.

IronDean2099 - 12/14/2023, 9:28 AM
@Urubrodi - heres a pitch: Thor 5 ends with Thor sacrificing himself and blowing something up or whatever and he vanishes in a flash of lightning.

Then the post credits scene is a doctor waking up from a nightmare. We see a nametag. Dr Donald Blake.

Then change actor and reinvent the character for the next one.

Maybe tone wise, something like Ironman 3 if that makes sense.

I would like to see a Thor 5. With a good writer & director, there are still great stories that could be told.
