The Witcher season 4 and season 5 will shoot back-to-back, though the latter will bring the Netflix series to a close. However, the race is on to adapt three of Andrzej Sapkowski's books in two seasons...

Netflix has confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that The Witcher season 4 has started production in the UK, but with good news comes bad. It's also been announced that, while the fantasy series is getting a fifth season, that batch of episodes will be the show's last.

Season 4 and season 5 are going to be shot back-to-back and, according to the streamer, "will complete the adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's books."

"It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia," creator and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a press release. "We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion."

"It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit - stay tuned to see how the story ends."

The fourth and fifth seasons will cover Sapkowski's three remaining books: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake. That's a lot of content to bring to the screen and the author has never shied away from expressing dissatisfaction with this take on his work.

After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out Season 3, the new season follows Geralt (Liam Hemsworth), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan), who are separated and traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire - and finding one another again.

Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) is joining The Witcher as Regis, a world-wise barber-surgeon with a mysterious past. Then, there’s Sharlto Copley (District 9) as the infamous bounty hunter Leo Bonhart; James Purefoy (The Following) as Skellen, Emhyr’s court advisor and high-ranking spy; and Danny Woodburn (Watchmen) as Zoltan, the fan-favorite dwarf from the books and games.

We're sure the plan was for The Witcher to last longer than this, but interest in the series waned and spin-off series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, proved a flop with a dire 28% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

"As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia," Hemsworth previously said of boarding the fantasy series. "Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure."

"Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world."

The Witcher season 4 and season 5 don't currently have confirmed premiere dates. Stay tuned for updates.

I mean, it's not like they actually adapt the books...

@TheyDont - I think a movie producer once said that only 15% of a source material has to be accurate to be considered an "adaptation". That includes biopics and books too so maybe they met the 15% or near it lol

bkmeijer1 - 4/19/2024, 2:46 PM
@mastakilla39 - that's a really low number to be honest. Kinda expected it to be 50% instead. Although I guess 15 makes sense too.

I suppose Fallout does count as an adaptation, but as it's a new story in the original source material's canon it probably does only adapt 15%.

I can’t wait to not watch them continue to totally ruin this.

It should’ve ended with Cavill.

@TheNewYorker - Was never going to happen because they were pushing for the women to takeover the show.

Makes sense since I feel there’s hardly any hype for this show after Cavill went and it seems like this take got more divisive as it went along in S2 & 3 (only seen S1 and thought it was ok)…

Honestly , the best thing out of this version was the Nightmare of The Wolf anime film which I thought was good (written by Beau DeMayo who showran X Men 97).

Anyway , might catch up to see how it ends but if not then I hope it wraps up well for the fans still sticking with it.

@TheVisionary25 - and there's another animated movie coming up as well, so there's that to look forward to. Don't know which canon (show, games or books) it is though

Announcing the end is the best move they could have made after recasting Geralt. Those of us on the fence can now see the end of the tunnel. Makes it a bit easier to stick with the show knowing what the commitment is to see it through to the end.

I like Seasons 1 & 2, but 3 was atrocious and phoned in. I guess this is what happens when the producers and showrunners aren't fans of the material. Guess thats why its more about politics and forced feminism rather than the Witcher and his crew.

Don't hate shows about feminism or female protagonists but the shit they did in S3 was bad. I like Yennifer and Ciri dynamics which was great, but the Tissia crap and her random female sorcerers solving a mystery and trying to prove they can rule better than men was so long and boring....yet it was the main arc of this season...smh

This show is so hard to follow if you don’t read the books or played the video game. I get the general premise but when they say people’s names and locations I’m like wtf is going on. British accents don’t help either.

Lol why even bring it back at all after Cavill if they're planning on ending it right away anyway?
TheLight
TheLight - 4/19/2024, 7:07 PM
@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Because the showrunner wants to give both Henry and the fans/audience a big middle finger for not agreeing to her "vision" so she's going to drag the limping skidmark of this series to the finish line just to prove a point.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Shows that have a multi-season plot and which expect to come to an end become much less valueable if they are not finished. Whatever the big reveal was never happens and that sours the fan base. This was that kind of show as opposed to a procedural like NCIS. Finishing it gives you a chance to save what you've already got in the can and since it appears Netflix owns it, they protected it.

But there is no way the fan base is going to hang around for very long with no cavill . Two seasons is pushing it and that's why it's ending.

@Th3Batman - The Witcher is a massive IP. This will likely not be the last attempt to adapt the material.

@Th3Batman - I would expect Netflix bought a certain amount of exclusivity. I doubt anything happens for another 5 years at the least and even then the fact that this has been done will deter anyone else from touching it.

Cavill was the only one whose heart was in the project. This was just a desperate cash grab for Netflix and them trying to find their own Game of Thrones hit series.

Already thought they were shooting 4 and 5 back to back. Even though that's not the case, it's good to know 5 will be last.

Netflix always keeps blueballing us with open endings, so about time we get a definitive ending to something. Even if their focus should just be on one season at a time.

The books admittedly spend a good deal of time on the female protagonists and it works well as the story comes together so those upset by Geralt appearing less may be missing that aspect of the novels. That said, how they’ve chosen to spend their time away from Geralt episode to episode has mostly been a multi-season mistake at this point.

That should go well….

They completely botched this adaptation from such a promising start. The writers and showrunners just couldn’t stick to the source and get out of their own way.

I really hope they one day can revamp it on hbo max or Amazon Netflix was not the best choice for a Witcher franchise
